normal mode/vsc sport/trc off
Explain with your own words what do you feel when you drive the 3 different modes for the gt86. When and where do you prefer to drive like that? Which is your favorite mode? Any nice experience to tell?

All three are just tolerance levels before the traction system kicks for what ever you are doing. Even when traction is off it is still affected by the traction system. If I want to turn it off I do the pedal dance.

There's a thread that talks about a complicated sequence of pushing pedals and engaging and disengaging the parking brake that will actually properly defeat the electronic aids. Can't remember the specifics but when I'm at home and have more time I'll try and find it and link to it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

This is a thread about the "pedal dance". I've read a couple different ways of how to actually do it though.

well, ill be the one to toss this out there:
dont be stupid and turn off everything on the street. the pedal dance should only be performed and utilized on a closed course.

And YES, I almost got stuck in some snow this weekend. No, I WAS stuck in snow and was like 20 miles up a dirt road! I realized the car was in this mode; I tend to do exactly what you do and turn it all off most of the time. With the TC on and with a light foot on the clutch I was able to back the car out of the "too deep" snow back onto some dry ground. It saved my ass. I also found in the rain the car becomes too tail happy at inopportune times. With the TC fully engaged its a definite advantage. I can easily feel the car braking. It also feels as though the car is altering the steering somewhat. Last edited by boead; 03-25-2013 at 01:53 PM. |

Pedal dance is not an option. As it affects ABS performance in tighter and hard braking situations because it cancels brake force distribution. Long story short it's not really a "mode" to select, it's a diagnostic setting that can have un-predictable results.

Correct. Another FR-S guy at the last autoX event mentioned he hated the characteristics of the car after the pedal dance. It confuses the ABS computer and renders the car more unpredictable. He and I prefer to drive with the VSC+TCS off by holding for 3 seconds.

2 buttons, multiple outputs. Varying degrees of slip angle
1. All nannies on when you start the car; use this in bad weather, otherwise usually drive with #2 on normal days. 2. VSC sport - won't let you spin the tires (4-5K launch), but will let you drift around a corner - fairly limited, but did save my butt once in the rain 3. VSC Sport/Trac off - lets you do a spirited start but turns off (Trac) after 31mph. Won't really let you get sideways too much due to the VSC 4. All nannies off - press the left button for 5 seconds....at ANY speed. Go have fun doing donuts, hand brake u-turns, drifting! ABS still active. In this mode, feel free to wrap yourself around a tree, nothing will stop you (except the tree)....usually use this on country roads and when little traffic around the city. |

Even "competent" drivers screw up. Ask any NASCAR driver.
