UK WhatCar? GT86 Review

I did a search for "Whatcar?" and nothing came up.... so....

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/toyo...-review/260328

I particularly like the following words which are assembled together in exactly the way I was hoping they would be...

"The GT 86 (pronounced eight six) develops 197bhp, which is enough to blast it to a top speed of 145mph, with the first 60mph completed in less than 6 seconds.

For once ‘inspirational’ is not too strong a word. The GT 86 is not about how fast you go – its on-paper performance is merely average – but rather how you go fast.

However, the engine performs a supporting role to a chassis of a quality that’s rare at any price. It provides a level of driver interaction unknown in its class, courtesy of beautifully linear steering and a poise and balance that’ll get you back in the habit of driving not because you have to, but because you want to."

The not so good for me anyway...

"What’s it like inside? Cars will come to the UK in one spec only. A a disappointing automatic gearbox (a six-speed manual comes as standard) will be the only option. Toyota has not finalised that specification yet, but says it will be fully loaded, with equipment including leather seats and satellite-navigation."

My only concern was that I wouldn't be able to afford the fully loaded one, so I could have got the base spec with just the one or two options I really wanted. However, At an estimated £25k fully loaded as the only trim level.... I'm afraid I'll have to do a little more saving and hold off a purchase for another year or so. Hopefully the £25k is over egging it somewhat. Cannea wait to hear official pricing

Maybe the UK will reverse the US market? High Spec Toyota and low spec Subaru?

and Japan as usual, gets everything

That's very odd considering that Toyota UK's website is listing the GT 86's weight at 1,180kg, definitely the weight of a stripped model. If it only comes fully loaded they'll have to revise that weight claim.

sad for UK...i hope you guys get better availability and a better price set than what is normally offered in Europe.

Id hate for people to get jewed like many of us in the US does when it comes to the Japanese automotive industry

It's a tricky one, but at least in the UK it isn't too tricky to import from Japan, so if there are some significantly better JDM models we won't miss out. For instance the sort of thing Lichfield imports does for Subaru's currently.

Mitsubishi kind of did this with the lancer saloon when it came out - the gs3 and gs4

both fairly high spec making it ultimately not affordable/competitive with the alternatives

I'm really not impressed with the picing rumors bouncing around for the UK at the moment, I never expected the £20k price stated in the early days of the concept to be true - but having it compete with the price of the astra vxr, renaultsport megane, scirocco GT etc would have been the best tactic to take IMO

Has anyone else said 0-60mph in less than 6 seconds?

Imperial seconds are equal to 1.2 regular seconds.

Haha makes sense, imperialists always came across as a bit slow...

Official stat is 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 6.0 seconds. Not hard to deduce that 0-60mph will take less than 6 seconds.
