The VR-4 was plenty light for it's day. We tend to hold some of these cars to todays standards and forget that back then the HPs were lower, the cars were heavier and the tech was still growing. Sure they may not stack up against the specs of today but back then they ruled. The sad part is that so many died a slow and agonizing death at the hands of the ricers and self proclaimed "tuners" when the F&F movie came out so good ones are hard to find today.

Back on topic.
I have seen the Miada, S2000, and RX8 throw up here many times but not sure people fully read the OP's needs. Yes they are all comparable to the FRS/BRZ but there are a few problems with them as recommendations for his stated purpose. He does not intend to track and needs to haul stuff so why focus on the most track worthy cars possible? He has a limited budget (and good for him for recognizing that) and with the exception of the Miata good reliable versions of these cars in that price range could be a quest. How many times have we read on a thread that people really want but can't find a reasonably priced S2000?
What I haven't seen here is a recommendation for a V6 Mustang, Camaro or Challenger. There should be loads of hairdresser driven ones out there at a reasonable price (could be wrong I have never looked) since so many were produced.

Oh I agree I owned a Vr-4 and loved it! Also owned a SL that was converted to a single turbo and pushed 550whp and weighed in partly gutted at 2700lbs. Both cars were amazing. Compared to the competition at the time though (RX7, Supra, 300zx TT) they were heavy, although they were AWD and marketed as GT cars, so that played into it as they were fully loaded with all the new tech of the time.

I only mention the Miata and the RX8 because they are the closest to the 86 in my opinion that can be had for a relatively low cost. The RX8's reliability is questionable at best however.

Yes exactly they are GTs and to compare to the "sports cars" of the time is not fair. Even the sports cars were heavier and had lower HP though (some much lower).

Oh I get why people keep referencing the cars most comparable to the 86 it is just they are not the answer to everybody's needs.

I agree with @Tcoat on this one, if you are looking for "sporty" and need some level of carrying capacity these are good choices. MomHawk is a musician (keyboard/flute) and she often carries her gear around in her V6 Mustang Convertible when she doesn't feel like driving our Suburban. Her MOX8 and stand fit in her car (it's a tight fit in the front but it works). Also, you are more likely to find a version of these that have been driven "gently".

@soilent I can only tell you what I do in your situation. You know your budget, and you know generally your needs. I have bought a lot of used cars over the years and I almost always do this process:
  1. Determine my budget
  2. Determine the primary need I am looking to fill (heavy hauler, kid's starter car, sports car)
  3. Determine how old/miles I'm willing to go (I usually use 10 years old and 75,000 miles) and which is more important to me, usually it is dollars, mileage, age.
  4. Start with Autotrader and other sites that let you set those types of filters and see what pops up.
You'll be amazed at the variety of vehicles you will have to select from. From there, I figure out the specific models I have interest in and then go on a car hunt making sure to look at history and having a mechanical inspection. 3 of the 5 cars in my "fleet" right now were purchased this way. By being really selective I've always had "good luck" with used cars. I also only pay cash for used cars, so I'm never at risk for getting stuck with a payment for a dead car.

Basically, my "golden rule" is if I already owned the car I was looking at, would I be ready to get rid of it at the age/mileage it is currently at, or would I still drive it and maintain it.

Now, to be fair, you have to balance that with I rarely get rid of a car while it has any residual value at all. I expect just about any car I purchase (new or used) to be driven to at least 200,000 miles, and I never expect to get any value out of a warranty so warranties don't matter to me (auto companies wouldn't warranty a car past when they would expect it to break). Not everyone thinks that way.

I didn't read through every comment, so maybe its already been stated, but what about a BMW E36 M3? Or and E46 330i?

Youre looking to spend well over 15k on older sports car especially BMW. Maintenance is a pain.

Not over 15k on an E36. An E46 M3, yes. But 330i could be found for under $15k. And maintenance is still pretty easy on those for DIY. Shops will charge a lot purely because it says BMW.

Hmmm...I actually crossed shop a Civic SI and honestly it felt superb!
Personally, I would look into one of those. You could get the 4 door model, it has 205hp, more tq 6 speed and drives well.
Biggest difference is that it's FWD, but if that doesn't bother you then your getting a more refined car with the same power with probably even better reliability.

They hold their values very well so you should be looking at a blobeye/hawkeye (2004-2007) to stay within your budget range. This is definitely something you should drive and find out if you like it.
Ej20's have tendancy's to spin bearings as well

Ya, everybody gets so focused on RWD they rule out some perfectly good FWD vehicles. For what the OP is looking for he could probably find a decent Civic in his price range.

Rather than a Civic Si, I'd get a GE8 model Honda Fit Sport with a manual (that's the previous model -- I haven't driven the new ones).

I actually went to the dealership back in 2009 to buy an Si, and test drove a Fit out of curiosity. Ended up buying the Fit. It was WAAAY more fun to drive! I loved that car right up to the day it got totaled by a hailstorm. Paid $16,750 new for it, drove it til May 2013, and insurance paid me $14,200 for it.

It's got tons of room to haul stuff, gets almost 40 mpg, and will run forever. And did I mention they are fun to drive! I probably should have bought another one. I like my FR-S okay, but I'm supposed to like it. The Fit was an unexpected joy, and put a smile on my face every time I got behind the wheel.

Probably the best car I've ever owned...
