What is odd is I don’t recall anyone here complaining about failed valve springs. So it sort of shows how many people there are out there with these cars that have problems and aren’t posting about them on this forum. How many people are spinning bearings that also don’t post about it here?
I'm in the recall and really don't want them opening my engine up. Too many stories about dealership techs using too much sealant and then the next thing you know you have oil starvation issues from blocked oil passages.

It seems odd that this is such a big issues but I have never heard of it before!

There are 400,000 cars across several different models that the recall impacts. The one report says there were 94 reported issues across all those cars. I don't think this fits into your standard "the sky is falling" classification.

I'm just not sure what to think at this point. If it needs to go in I'll have to give it some serious thought at that time. It might be nice to know that the top end of the engine has been gone through (if they do it right). It would also be a great time to get the plugs changed, the serpentine belt and tensioners replaced and maybe whatever else I've been putting off because it's a hassle.

My FRS was built in June 2013, but the VIN isn't bringing up any recalls. Guess I dodged a bullet? The idea of my local dealership tearing apart my engine doesn't give me warm fuzzies.

My VIN is also outside the range, but the build date is within the range. mine states it was manufactured on 4/12, but my VIN is JF1ZCAC13D16009XX

How could it be that the first 2000 cars that rolled off the line are fine, but ones after that aren't?

Put your VIN in the NHTSA site posted earlier.

My understanding is that the valve springs are failing, which would indicate bad valve springs. The fact that it's just certain engines and not all from a certain point in time to another indicates that there's something different between these engines. The difference, seemingly without thinking too deeply, are either the springs themselves or the installation of the springs. If it was installation I'd imagine they'd fail much more frequently and quicker and across more models. Just 94 have been reported so far. So I'm lead to believe certain valve springs from a certain supplier are failing due to how they were made or what they were made out of. Just me trying to figure it out, though, with what makes sense.

Toyota was fantastic to me when my engine went. Aftermarket tune and pulley and they still warranteed it. Don't want to push my luck with having it messed with again though.

Same here. But I also don't get how my production number could be 70xxxx when my car has a 4/2012 build date. There must be something different with the vin they we realize (edit: It seems like the last 5 are production numbers, the other number is line related).

IDK if I'll do it though. at 151k miles right now no issues. If for some reason they have to pull the timing cover I may just do it since that leak is getting a bit worse. Could also get the spark plugs done if I hold out another 30k miles lol

What I wonder is that, the spring number SU003-00204 haven´t been changed, its actually same starting year 03/2012 to now days.

So, if they change valve springs, are they better than the old one´s

maybe the initial set provided was faulty (other producers after 2013)?

The specifications of the springs weren't changed, it was a batch of springs out of which a few had production defects, so they're recalling any cars that have springs from the batch they deemed at risk.
