coyote,I think if you want to get it for $200-300 (Adayo), you would have to look at alibaba or the likes.
I have seen a very similar unit to the ca-fi on eBay for 500, but I believe it does not have the ca-fi gui, but the same functionality is there.

I might take the plunge on this one, and see if I can work with 2forme to do a comparison?
Looks like it has potential. Any info on if it's resistive or capacitive touch screen?

I apologize to anyone else who may have been offended by anything I've said. Sometimes it's hard to pull out of that mode when someone irritates you that much.

Back on topic now

I actually just got an email from the makers of the ca-fi unit. They are going to be sending me a software update to download. This is exciting because 1) they are apparently paying attention to the software and 2) because it provides a lead for possible rooting. @ProTekk, would you like me to forward the software to you for reviewing when I get it?
Most definitely. Going to be hard to root without the head unit itself though. Maybe we could schedule a day or something to meet up and take a crack at yours?

That is my only concern. I am not sure.. I would like to think its made in the same factory, to the same specs (other specs are identical) but maybe that is the cause of the cost difference?

I've asked the seller.

Absolutely. Just let me know which way you decide to go and I would gladly work with you on a comparison.

One thing to note, Ca-Fi has two units that look identical. The 620800 and the 621000. The lower one has a resistive touch screen, 800MHz cpu, Android 2.2 and no Torque support. The higher one is the one I got. Judging by the price on the eBay one, I feel it might be the lower end model. If it has a resistive screen, you'll know which one it is.

Let me know how you make out.

It appears to have the 1ghz cpu and the 512 ram, as well as android 2.3 according to the listing. So I am hovering over the buy now button, though I might wait until Skorov hears back from the seller.

Playing devil's advocate here, I must commend CMOS for being helpful.

His argument (stating that Android/iOS devices can't be compared to PCs since they're all designed on PCs) got me investigating Android compiler/IDE apps. If it weren't for him, I would not have discovered AIDE, which is for all intents and purposes Eclipse on Android (they even share the same price tag ).

I think I now have a new side project machine of choice

you can download maps to work offline with google maps. So you could feasibly connect to your home wifi, and download the map before you head off..

I basically downloaded the whole of the bay area into an offline map!

I believe google maps deletes them after a certain number of days.

So that unit on eBay is resistive. =( However, he said that I could return it within 30 days for a full refund (I'd pay the return shipping of course).

Still trying to decide what to do.

Eclipse is just a java app. Since most android development is in Java, it isn't surprising that there would be a JRE on it by default. Netbeans is also a Java IDE written in Java, but a lot of people love Eclipse for whatever reason. I have had nothing but buggy experiences with Eclipse. IntelliJ and Netbeans work great and good respectively. (Disclaimer, I stopped using eclipse after Helios. So the newer version *might* have addressed some of the bugs. Not sure though).

The talk of PC vs. Android was pretty off topic for this thread. But shining light on what the real price of the Android HU is was definitely beneficial though. The unit in listed in this thread definitely seems worth $250 to $350 for what it does.

Well how important is capacitive touch to you?

I understand that's a base Ca-Fi unit without the Ca-Fi software. The screenshots show different software than what I have on mine.

The good news is, if we can get my unit rooted, we may be able to bring Torque and other goodies to more units!
