Disabled parking question....
Just had back surgery that hoepfully fixes me up to somewheree in the middle of the back-pain scale. Five out of ten would be fantastic. I can get around OK, but getting into and out my car in limited space is almost impossible.
I qualify for a disabled parkinmg permit. Would getting one to be able to park in a disabled spot in my aprtment be abusing it? Unless surgery fails, that would be its only use. Watcha' all think? |

I think this is a morality question. Do you feel that parking closer is physically beneficial? Or just it just make life a little easier because you're parked closer and don't want to walk so far?

I fractured my T6 vertebra during a rollover accident. It is partially crushed around my spine. I live with pain that comes and goes. They offered to fuse it with the other vertebra, but this usually only lasts 10-15 years. I was in my 20's when it happened, so decided to not get fused till later in my life.
I say; If the doctor will give you a parking pass, use it!

Close i not an issue, it's space. I can't open my door fully in any of the regualr parking spots. It's wither another car, wall of pillar. I need to be able to open the door all the way.

If you have to ask random people on the internet then probably not. That usually means you personally don’t feel like you need it enough so you resort to asking others if it’s ethically okay to do.

Honestly if you qualify for it, I don't see why one wouldn't take it. There was a medical criteria that you passed that made you eligible for it to begin with. Unless you know you're going to be taking up the spot of someone else who needs it more than you, I doubt you'll encounter any moral quandaries.
And you're saying you need to open the door all the way just to get out or it's borderline impossible...I'd say that's more than enough valid reason for disabled parking. Don't sweat it, and hope everything goes well. |

I don't understand why you're conflicted. You're struggling to get in and out of the car because of a medical condition. Appropriate use of a handicap parking spot - you need the extra space.

If you qualify for it, and if it helps one little bit to ease the back pain, whether is opening the door fully like what others have mentioned to get out of the car easier then go for it. That's why they are there for. Abusing it is taking moms or grandmas handicap sign and using it as your own.
And I hope you feel better soon. |

If you qualify for it and it benefits you I'd say go for it. This car can be hard enough to get in and out of without back pain/surgery. Sounds like you plan to only use it in parking situations where you actually need the extra space so it doesn't seem like you would be abusing it.

Get the permit. If they find they need more spots they will add them. |

I've thought about getting one due to arthritic hip pain that flared up after an injury. No more just rolling out of bed in the morning. I gotta think through how I'll do it to avoid searing pain. And it still hurts like a mo-fo.
Get the handicap placard for when you need it. Don't have to use it every day. But I understand the pride in not wanting to. I think about this often. |

Boy, I sure do hear you, feel your pain, about that situation. I have back surgery (laminectomy) scheduled next month for a spinal stenosis condition. I park where I can get the drivers side door all the way open, but, that don't mean it will be that way when I return to the car. What to do? * try to get in on the passenger side and crawl over the center console? * open the trunk and crawl through? * reach in, place the car out of gear and push/pull it out of the parking space? * wait for the vehicles driver that is blocking you to return? If you have ever had back pain, you will know how to answer those questions. If you qualify for a disabled sticker, I'd suggest you obtain one and use it when necessary. So, what of back surgery did you have/are you going to have done? I hope it is successful. humfrz |

Good luck with yours. The area where they yanked the cyst out feels great (spine) but the incision site is a big ole' lump and hurts. |
