Variable Exhaust Idea: Is it Plausible?
Hello all, still pretty new to posting here so feel free to let me know if I've butchered anything.
I have the idea to get the varex 3" to 3" muffler (which has a valve that can be openened/closed to louden/quiet the exhaust) installed in-line of my Greddy Evo Single exit catback. I love the sound of my Greddy and want it to sound like that 80% of the time, but that other 20% I want it silenced. I already have a Greddy silencer, and while it works, it is annoying to put on. Would I be able to fit the varex muffler inline somewhere of my exhaust (maybe before the resonator or right after the resonator) so I can keep the sound of my Greddy but have the option to silence it with a switch? Thanks! Dimensions of Varex Muffler: Length of Can: 15" Can size: 7" diameter Entrance/Exit size: 3" diameter, 3" length

I may be the minority, but I would suggest never putting something in your exhaust that, if damaged, could block the flow of the exhaust.
The idea can be implemented, but I'd say you're better off just managing your sound levels manually with the silencer if you don't like the exhaust choice you made sometimes. This is the game we play! It's nice to be loud and cool until you are delivering pizza to a funeral home and they are waiting outside for you

Not a bad point you make there. Worst case the Varex Muffler is stuck closed and performance is hurt just long enough for me to get it to the shop to get it fixed or removed.
I've decided to go through with it though! I'm going to have my Greddy Revolution RS cut right near the rear axle and reroute it out of the passenger side exhaust cutout and have the Varex Muffler inline where the OEM muffler would be. Here's some quick measurements I took below for the way my exhaust is currently routed.

There was another thread of someone that did something like that, on my phone, so can't search easily right now. Might be able to search my username, as I talked to him a few times about it

and this one: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111280 Wil did some awesome work with both and I read through both thoroughly The Varex Muffler I'm using is similar to his electronic valve creation but pre-built and only around ~$300. Plus I'm not a fan of a straight pipe dump, I love my Greddy's sound. I'm having a shop do the piping and install in early June and I will report back with pics and sound clips for sure!

Can't imagine the looks you got that day . I wasn't nearly as concerned with the sound level of my exhaust until I moved in with the gf in the suburbs and we don't want to make enemies. At my old apartments I cold started it no silencer one night and some guy came out on his porch, threw his hands up in the air and stared at me until I left. I'm surprised I was never kicked out of that place haha .

It is done! Will try to get a sound clip soon. The variable exhaust works great, it is as quiet as stock with the valve closed. With the valve open its a little over half the sound which my old setup was (without the Varex Muffler) which I am kind of sad about. Here's a pic below of the welds/setup. Excuse my old dirty pos around the exhaust setup.

Here are the soundclips! My full exhaust setup is the following bits:
- Tomei UEL Catless Headers - Greddy Revolution RS 3.0 Catback (13-16 FRS) - Varex 3" in 3" out Muffler welded inline, where the oem muffler was, of the catback First Video is of Revving with it closed first then open. Next is a driveby of it closed. Lastly is a driveby of it open. Overall, adding the Varex Muffler quieted the exhaust more (even when fully open) but honestly the exhaust was pretty obnoxious before it. I'm very happy with it and would highly recommend this procedure to anyone. For the varex muffler and the install costs together I've got about $600 into the "Varex" portion. The switch works within about 4 feet of the receiver (but who needs to use it when you're out of the car anyways?). Just one press of the remote and the exhaust is either open or closed.
