The 86 has significantly more ground clearance as a DD than a C7 or 458, that's what makes the CoG claim impressive. Anyone who would prefer to have a higher CoG cuz 'marketing ploy' should really just buy a Mustang or Challenger cuz they appear detached from physics. While 50:50 is a marketing ploy, it's not because 50:50 is just as good as 56:44, it's because 50:50 is not perfectly ideal. 50:50 is still better than forward bias. Same thing for CoG. Lower IS BETTER, period. Drop the ground clearance to the same with some coilovers as a C7 or 458 and be impressed by your $25k car. It's okay. CoG is actually one of the main arguments for keeping the Corvettes pushrod OHV engine rather than OHC. Better weight distribution. A boxer would lower the C7 CoG even more but impact the suspension geometry up front and other packaging issues. So using the C7 as an argument against CoG being important is really a self defeating exercise.

A good chassis from the factory is often overlooked. Power can always be added via tunes and bolt ons. Japanese automakers have usually chased balance over raw horsepower.

The relevance was the lower cog and curb weight are just two pieces of the puzzle.

well this turned into a shit show a little bit. call it a marketing ploy or not. call it noteworthy or not. the corvette and miata were doing it in the 80s and they still are doing it today. the car isnt peerless. not in its price range, not in its era. it is amusing how many people are so fixated on a singular data point. i adore my brz. its the car thats stayed with me the longest out of any purchase. its great, but i dont think its because of some impossibly important metric that people dont seem to be too bothered by outside of this forum.

The Corvette had a 17.5in COG in the 80s? People love numbers. For example they are all about modern AT because it cuts a fraction of a second off a 0-60. The COG can be measured in an easy to compare number so you get people **** sizing with it.

I didn’t realize anyone here was saying it’s the only metric to measure a car on though.

Also, COG is talked about in just about any chassis setup book. It isn’t irrelevant.

Don't know about the 80's but the C6 and C7 have a COG of 17.5 as I recall although I think I have managed to find the one thing I couldn't figure out how to find on the Internet. I did find one reference to an article on Road and Track for Tesla that mentions the Tesla had an 18, which was the second lowest they had measured, only beaten by the C6 Z which was 17.5".

Yeah I’m kind of doubting they were doing it in the 80s with the higher ride and no aluminum. But I can guarantee you they were focused on getting it as low as possible. That’s just what you do when building a sports car.

yeah. ive read that it was as low as 14.x" or something crazy for the c4. the miata was lower then too and the nd is still lower with the top down.

im not saying people are saying its the only metric. im just saying that they fixate on it to support their ideas. its important. i agree but this forum really likes to go overboard with the cog and how superior the boxer engine is from time to time.

all ive ever been meaning to say is that its just one point of data. and without other pieces of data (roll axis specifically) it doesnt mean anything at all. my miatas have had lower cog but i dont think they handled better, my elise has a higher cog and i dont think it handles worse.
