2023 Silverado EV

Chevy had their unveiling and opened up reservations on the Silverado EV today. You can see the official release on their site and there are already first look videos up on YouTube.

First, based on it's side profile and midgate configuration, it should probably been called the Avalanche EV, because that is what it immediately reminded me of, but OK.

Price ranges from $39,995 for the WT (Work Truck) configuration to $105,000 for the Silverado EV RST Release Model that has all the bells and whistles. The $105K model reservations sold out in under 10 minutes from what I could tell. For those that didn't get to see it, the screen capture of hte release truck is below. The truck really goes on sale in Summer 2024 starting at the base price. There will also be a Trail Boss version down the road.

A lot of good tech in the truck, including charging up to 100 miles in 10 minutes on a level two charger, and the ability to use the power of the battery to charge other EVs, run tools, and back feed your home.

I'm interested in a version of the truck on the lower end of the RST range or top end of the WT range. For that, I did snag a refundable reservation number for the 2024 truck, although not sure I'll execute on it yet.

Also interesting was there was a quick announcement of the Equinox and Blazer EVs for 2023, but they spent no real time on them.

I like the option of the midgate as well. I had the same thoughts about the tailgate, until I saw them in action. Two coworkers have them and actually use their trucks as trucks on the weekend. The first few months they owned it, they had all sorts of tales on how the tailgate helped them get work done.

People were complaining about the cheap plastic bumpers on the new Solterra and BZ4X.

Lawl. This thing trumps those, I think.

I still think I'd go with the F-150. I like that all of the accessories carry over from the ICE version, and it overall is more truckish in style, inside and out. I'm also curious to see longer beds come out for the F-150, where this truck doesn't look like you can have a longer bed or even a short cab.

It also sounds like they will be a few years behind the F-150 in terms of getting out work trucks. It seems like they will really be trying to push the higher end versions first. I'm continually stunned that people can afford these things, but whatever. Maybe inheritances are coming through or people are taking equity on their homes' increasing in value.

i'm not arguing the usefullness of the multi-gate. i think it's functionally better than fords pull-out step and pivot-up handle. but it's an incredibly complex thing on a part that see's a ton of wear and tear when putting a truck to actual work.

i prefer my tailgates to be simple so that i don't cry so much at the replacement costs.

i've never owned a truck that didn't have a dent/crease/scratch somewhere in the tailgate from something in the first month of ownership...

Also announced...

Equinox EV, which in RS trim actually looks quite attractive.

Cadillac Inner Space is generic luxury blob.

If it really comes in at a base of $30K like the press is saying this may be a car to watch.

Already got an email back from my local Chevy dealer (who I've been a customer of for years) confirming my reservation and saying they'll let me know as soon as orders open.

We both acknowledged that isn't likely to happen until 2nd quarter 2023.

I assume you are talking about a Equinox EV. I'll be super interested in seeing how it compares to the Mach E. A lot of journalists are praising the Kia EV6 right now too.

No, Silverado EV high end WT or low end RST. It would potentially replace our Suburban in 2024, assuming my reservation puts me in line to get one in that timeframe..

The Equinox EV is interesting and I will likely look at it too. Size-wise though I would lean more towards the Blazer EV (which will be released about the same time), which will be closer to the size of the Mach E. However, both the Equinox and the Blazer do not fill a need I have at this point.

Any car I buy now has to fit a profile going into retirement. I have a need for a local and vacation hauler that the Silverado fits, but the Equinox and Blazer do not.

Read in one "first look" article the the WT variant will not have the midgate. That makes no sense other than a cost savings I suppose.

very surprising. i would think the costs would average out better to make it standard.

now i'm curious if it could be added back in later though-- it ought to just be a latch-on panel...

I can see heavy industrial sites (ie. mines, etc.) across North America switching their light vehicle fleets to the work truck versions of this and collecting heavy government subsidies/tax breaks.
Chevy avalanches had the same midgate. Apparently, never went back in right if taken out.
I read somewhere that this truck is based on the electric hummer platform. Wonder what it weighs because the ev hummer is 9046lbs.
Otherwise, sharp looking truck. If I could charge it in the back yard with solar panels, might be cost effective in 10 years of driving.
