I don't get this thread

if I thought there was a cheaper better overall car than the twins, why would I have bought a twin?

In my mind the twin had the best combination of fun factor, aesthetics, handling capability, daily utility, fuel economy, and reliability.

You wouldn't have. But I'm asking about cars that cost more than the twins.

A hopefully better way of asking the question:

Ignoring the twins, how much would one have to pay for a new car that you think would match or exceed your overall satisfaction level with a stock twin?

I like the Lotus Elise Sport 220, RWD, manual, screaming NA 4 pot,.....cost 3 times as much as a twin here though.

Does leave the twins wanting in every department.

Correction: I can use the rear seat in the 86 for my gym bag.

Those are really different cars though. I mean I guess they both kinda do the same thing if you focus on street sport driving but it's a bit weird to overlook other, much more comparable cars to land so far off.

What other coupes with RWD, NA, 4 pot and manual are there new?

What's your pick of RWD, NA, 4 pots with a manual transmission?

You can cherry pick data points to make all sorts of things make sense but when you drive a car it doesn't add up. It's a lot more like a miata or Cayman. A lot. Also the elise 220 isn't na.

I didn't "cherry pick", they were the advertised selling points for the 86.

I didn't pick the MX5 because I've been there before. I had a NB.

I didn't pick the Cayman because 6 cyl, and even more expensive than the Lotus Elise.

I acknowledge I did make a mistake with the Sport being NA, the last Elise I played with was NA, 2010??? maybe?????.

Anyways, I perfer the rawness of the Elise, that's what I would swap out the 86 for if I wanted a different RWD 4 banger manual sports coupe.

From googling I have 3 choice of my preferred platform type in NA.

New NA

Mazda mx5
Toyota 86
Subaru BRZ

New boosted

BMW not this black duck
Ford are you kidding me
Porsche nice but costs more than Elise.

We don't have an Elise in America anymore and I don't know how possible 220hp is without fi.

One of the biggest selling points was that they bench marked the Cayman, which is a 4 cylinder BTW. I also don't think having owned a miata makes it less comparable. Especially if it's a 20 year old model prohibiting you from considering a new one. I'm not really trying to change your opinion though. Just sharing mine.

Fair call

When I got rid of my 2015 STI (I found I didn't like the AWD experience) I went looking for something like my old NB because it was awesome.

I wasn't a fan of the look of the ND though, plus I needed a little more storage space (back seat??) inside than what the MX5 had.

The 86 fit the bill perfectly with the benifit of a hard top (my NB had a removable hard top) and a drop down back seat for putting stuff.

We don't see alot of Caymans here, maybe because they cost 200k new, plus the only cars I've seen here are 6 cyl.

Not sure if a 4 pot was released here???

Yes they are a much better car than a twin, but cost a bomb.

Hence why I chose the Lotus, yes I would be sacrificing interior storage space, and yes, as you pointed out it is supercharged not NA.

New Lotus only costs 100k.

Here in Australia there isn't alot to choose from when comparing a typical car to a twin.

Me, I'm still keeping my 86 for a few more years at least, lets see whats new then, if available, it will be RWD 4cyl manual little coupe.

With Toyota having liaisons with BMW now, the Toyobaru marriage may be coming to a close, leaving the gap in the market for something else.

Maybe
