Umm, gasoline powered cars haven't smoked like that (intentionally) since before World War 1. Complaining about outdated emission standards and posting a photo of someone rolling coal is about as misleading as you can get.

What are you talkin' about? Last time Lotus designed it's own engine was two decades ago.
How is bringing Lotus into this conversation even relevant?

The picture I've used is just an exaggeration of course. You are right, I just wasn't that serious. But the cars used to smoke a lot, way lot worse than today in my city. People were poorer on those days, and cars were too old; maybe that was the reason. Also using natural gas in the houses improved the weather quality a lot. However, I don't think it is fair to reject the gains of the emission restrictions.

Key word being intentionally! Couldn't even see my wife's 10 year old 74 Datsun from behind when she drove. Burned about 2 quarts of oil a week so the blue/black smoke was spectacular. You could tell where she had driven for about 10 minutes after she went by just from the hovering smoke trails. Helped keep the mosquitos down though. Be pulled over in a heartbeat these days but it was pretty common once upon a time.

Also - it's not about individual cars smoking like a diesel rolling-coal. It's about thousands and thousands of cars smoking just a little bit. Go to Mexico City where you'll see plenty of relatively modern cars (nineties onwards), and they still have plenty of smog issues thanks to different (lack of) emissions standards.

NO! It's about the commercial transport industry as a whole, world wide! That's trucks, trains, airplanes and ships that have gone on for many decades with little to no emission standards. Not to mention, lawn mowers, weed whackers, leaf blowers and a whole host of other internal combustion powered items. The family car makes up but a fraction of the total pollution that's been destroying our planet.

They don't design them because they can't make them useful. I am sure they'd rather have their own engines in their vehicles rather than buy them from Toyota.

That's fantasy. In many cases the automakers drove the legislation to keep others out. There is a huge difference between useful laws and total and complete stupidity. We are far past total and complete stupidity when it comes to emissions law.

I still don’t understand Toyota’s obsession with making the front of their cars look like some aquatic creature but whatever.
