Yep, I thought I saw a video on Youtube someplace that didn't require the engine hoist. I'm looking for it.

I would like to go with another 58 to 64 Chev but want to stay small. Also since I have no tools or shop space anymore want a turnkey not a project so the real classics are more than I want to spend. By going with a mid to late 70s "orphan" car I can have the unusual at a reasonable cost. I am in no hurry so will be watching for just the right thing.

You could jack and support the motor and remove the subframe, and then remove the tranny. It's easier with a hoist, but it's potentially doable without one. If you have a few friends around with a few 2x4s and tow straps, one could lift the motor without a hoist - it just sucks and could end in tears. I've worked on an engine swap without a hoist before, and I would not recommend it.

I wouldn't say it's the only way. Back in my Honda building days, we used to get the car way up on jack stands (enough to get a body under the engine/trans). Use the jack and a block of wood to hold up the engine from below. Pull the trans out and onto your/buddies chest HAHA!! Then muscle it back up. Those were the days!

You could go real old school and do it like I used to "back in the day". It worked just fine the time or 20 I did it.

That sounds similar to the method my brother described to me when I texted him, though instead of really strong guy, he said another floor jack.

He was also a Honda guy and owned a 400+ hp RSX and later on an S2000.

You can probably rent a hoist for a reasonable price. It will make the job far easier (still a pain but easier)

I actually just found a place local to me that does just that. I'll try and get a quote on how much it would cost to rent a hoist.

Your bros advice makes sense now.

The second jack is really going to help, but ultimately you will still need to muscle the trans in place when it's up there (from the bottom and top). From what I remember, Murphy's Law always kicked in, and things never just slid into place
