Nice upgrade! I realize the title is a bit misleading - I'm actually interested in regrets and no-regrets. My temptations vary between E92 M3, GT350, 997.1, and F-Type coupe. Yeah all over the map, ranging from "practical" to "mid-life crisis". End of the day, it's not as nice as any of the above, but I love the connected/visceral feel of my lightly modded FR-S - one of these days maybe I'll get old enough (47 already) to move to a more refined car.

Until then, I have to keep saving for my kids college!

Out of the 4 cars you listed, handling wise and especially with the "connected/visceral" terms you used, the E92 M3 and 997.1 are the cars for you. Do your homework with the 997, as they had issues with engines. Don't know much about the GT350 although it's definitely appealing. And the F-type just seems like a compromised GT and not really driving for the sake of thrill of driving type of car.

Yeah I know about the IMS issues, as well the issues with the E92 M3's. All manageable with some investment. I'd imagine the GT350 is the more visceral experience of those options as stock, but haven't driven one so not sure. In the end, bang for buck, would probably go E92 M3.

But wait a minute - you're not helping me I'm supposed to be frugal and not spend my daughter's college fund - you're not helping!

congrats! apparently it's THE option to have. evo magazine had the regular GT as a long-termer and the tester didn't really jive with it. But in the last issue they tested the Bullitt and I guess the Magneride made all the difference. Apparently it kept up with a V8 M3 through the bends and beat it on the straights and carried a lot more speed than expected in general. But then again, 450 hp and 390 lb ft is nothing to sneeze at. Congrats again and enjoy it!

This is a great question, I am in the throws right now (BRZ is for sale but I am not trying too hard) of whether or not to "upgrade". My plan since I bought it was to turbocharge it, but now that I am at the cusp of doing so I am having second thoughts and thinking about just getting something with more power and comfort/space. If it does sell I will probably end up with a 08-10 BMW 650i coupe, but I did stumble accross a potential deal on a 6-speed E60 M5 but I still have some PO research to knock out before I go too hard after that one.

There have been many tales of woe on here over the years. I suppose most of the happy ones just never come back though so it is an example of the forum skewing the perspective.
Good example:

There are also of course the guys that changed and never went away but they usually spend most of their time raving about how perfect their 12 year old Porsche or something like that is so greatly superior and we are all a bunch of morons for liking the Twins as they are.

Well things like big dips in the entrance to beach lookout areas seem to be an issue.

Nothing happened! Besides, they rarely have those on tracks.

Hah yeah there's always those who try so hard to justify their choices. I never really feel the need for that - the 86 is not a perfect car by any stretch of the imagination. But it is unique - I can't find any car out there that fits *my* needs as well: lightweight + handles well + has back seats I can stuff my kids into + looks amazing + has decent reliability/low maintenance costs + gets decent safety ratings for its size + has great fuel economy + decent cargo space. And then there's the 'scrappy' nature the car has, especially with a few well placed exhaust and suspension mods. And it's quick enough for the back roads I mostly use.

All that said, I still sometimes lust after that E92 M3 V8 scream, Porsche flat 6 wail, etc. And a generally more luxurious interior is nice. So far, that hasn't been enough to lure me away yet.

Things like this clamshells bring brittle and expensive, the aluminum frame not being fixable, suspension glued to the body, cams getting wiped, lack of dealer or aftermarket support. Basically if I damage the brz I have little issue fixing it but it's not the case with an Elise

If so worried, why did you buy it? They are pretty tough little cars.
