251F I wouldn't worry. Run 5w30 and viscosity should be similar to 0w20 at 220F.

I currently run 0w40. I've thought about trying 5w30 or 5w40 to see how my pressures react at those higher temps. Maybe, my next oil change I might give a different weight a try.

I definitely agree that a quality oil even at 270 would resist breakdown quite well. It's really the pressures that have me a bit concerned.

If you go up a steep enough road in 2nd and 3rd gear at a spirited pace for 20-30 minutues straight you'll hit those temps with no oil cooler. Brake pads will fade and tires will get greasy just like on a track.

I had done some good before and after measurements when installing the Jackson dual radiator water to oil cooler. My finding ls were as follows:

-with regular 0-20 oil, driving at high rpm (say at 4000rpm or above) on the highway for 20mins or more can really crank out temps to 250F and up to 280F. I found its more a factor of rpm rather than speed.

-my recommendation would be for anyone NA Or FI that likes to drive at high rpm for extended periods to at Least go to a quality 5-40 oil. i would strongly recommend an oil cooler for Someone driving extensively at 5000rpm or more, such as on track.

-for my case, the dual jackson rad/oil cooler was very effective for an all year round solution , and kept temps below 240F (with 5-40 oil) even in high demand situations , while helping warming oil up in the winter time as well.

In mild ambient temps of maybe 70F-80F, with it hard over through the cooler, the engine on full boil for unlimited duty cycle can just keep up with the cooler. The oil temp remains thermostatically controlled to just above 180F but it rapidly cools as soon as I go back to cruising below 4000 RPM.

I still need to make a bracket for the valve but it sits nestled in some towels nicely for the time being. No chafing.

edit: Oh, and by 'rapidly cools," I mean it goes down to a reasonably, not shockingly 150F-160F from the thermostat bypass flow.
Bump for @timurrrr. I still haven't made a bracket for the valve because it has turned out to be perfectly comfortable laying on the towel. I'll take a pic of that if you want.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. Click on the image for full size
