BRZ LED DRL Strip Question

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to do a FRS -> BRZ front end swap, but I don't want BRZ headlights.

The problem with this is that the BRZ headlights have built-in turn signals, whereas the FRS headlights do not.

I want to turn the LED DRL strip above the fog light bezel on the BRZ bumper into an LED Switchback turn signal. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions how how I could do this.

I haven't seen the LED DRL strip in person, so I'm not sure what kind of bulbs are in it or if they're replaceable. If they can be replaced with LED switchback bulbs, I would assume the wiring would be pretty straight forward. If they can't be replaced, then this might be a bit more complicated.

Thoughts?

The BRZ LED DRL can only be replaced as a unit, unless you want to solder.

Soldering won't work.

They were like the main selling point for BRZ over an FRS for me.

Sorry for the off topic though. I think worst case scenario you could split the housing of the DRL and put new bulb/sockets in there maybe?

Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the BRZ head lights but they're just expensive and hard to source cheaply.

Stock FRS headlights can be had for like $150 a pair.

i've been slowly working on doing exactly that. all the current details are here
http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/show...ghts-internals

but i'm doing it because i want to use the turn signal location for other lighting ideas.

but i've since realized that i screwed up-- i'm used to working with through-hole designs where i can just flip the original to get a matching left/right pair, but with the components involved with this design, i need to design both boards independently to get all the connections to line up where they're supposed to be.. so the project is at about 50% in the design phase now..

but i really don't have much of an intention to sell these boards later on-- you're free to use the design if you'd like, i just don't think most will be willing to pay for what i expect my costs to be to design and build the entire setup...

That's awesome! I'm not very smart when it comes to all this electrical stuff, what makes it so expensive?

I'm assuming labour and craftsmanship plays a big role when designing.

Then what makes you think you can turn the LED DRL into an LED switchback so easily?

Erm, I never said it was going to be easy. I said it was something I wanted to do. I was trying to find out more information about whether or not it was a matter of changing bulbs and splicing wires or if it was more complicated.

You're just intentionally being an...... @sshole

somewhat. a lot of it has to do with the quality of parts. in general, when i've quoted led work in the past, i quote double whatever the raw parts cost is.. that typically works out to be about $5/hr for designing, building and testing the circuit boards--which is also why it's not really profitable for most platforms i've been involved in...

one of my stipulations is that i always use quality name-brand parts-- for instance, this project is going to use genuine lumiled rebel's for the led's, and then use led drivers with internal thermal cutoff. non-branded parts tend to have lower quality standards that can lead to early failure..

i could get away with not using name-brand stuff and save some money, but it only ends up hurting the quality of the end product later on.. i prefer to spend the extra now and make something that i'll never need to touch ever again..
