No, your airbox is not closed tight.

I think they probably rushed to get your filter in either during PDI or when they were installing it. Just unlatch it, pull out the filter and check it isn't pinched or damaged. Chances are they either flipped the filter around, or the tabs on the bottom side of the plastic cap aren't in the proper holes.

For the few cars I've tried, putting in the drop in filter results in this if the filter is being pinched or a bit thicker than normal. Might take a bit of elbow grease to pop it in properly.

No, the clips are the only thing that hold the filter in. The half not facing the front has to be lifted up a bit (so that the tabs on the underside that go into a hole come up) and pulled backwards at the same time to release the filter.

the air box is such a pain in the ass to put back together, it took me a long while trying to get it back together after putting in the TRD filter.

Be patient and wiggle it around until you get it right.

Worked for me

It was a pain for me as well. To put it into perspective, it's harder to install the filter right than it is to remove the entire stock intake and install an aftermarket one. lol Too bad an aftermarket intake resulted in me having to go back to the stock intake because my car ran like S**T!

Are a lot of people's boxes closed like this? Is there any danger in driving with it like it is in the first pic? I want to close it correctly but can't get it to.

I replaced the tube from the airbox to the throttle body, the airbox is a lot easier to get to and get resealed with that tube off. Kind of a pain but it is way easier once you have the tube out.
