Update: There's more going on. The really loud "clack" that sounded like metal on glass is gone but I'm not satisfied with the results. Still makes a little bit of a "click" after it's been sitting closed for a while. Meanwhile the passenger side window works perfectly.

Going back in today for another look. Apologies for my initial exuberance.

My drivers window was so off track it etched the glass. Had it replaced under warranty. It happened again and they found out the original track guide was bad.

Heh, I think the sound was exaggerated because it was so quiet. That's just the normal click of first the latch and then the window hard-stop. We're talking about something which, after sitting under the residual stress of normal closure, binds up. When reversed, it lets go with a "clack" almost like tapping the window with a stone.

Update: There was more wrong with the entire assembly alignment than actually correct. It's almost as if the components were slapped together without any alignment or more likely, they were aligned to a poorly-matched jig. I don't know how they do it in production.

Root cause appears to be accelerated wear due to a combination of water intrusion and misalignment. This water intrusion is the same that is addressed by the Frozen Window TSB. The Subaru document is better and there is also this one which admits the initial door strip is a POS.

I haven't yet disassembled the guts but I will purchase the parts and perform this correction myself. Stopping by the dealer tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Credit to @Sigh-on-Rice for collecting these service documents. Thank you, sir!

Curious, what parts did they replace? I can easily see the window scratching from a misaligned track.

Just FYI in case it helps, there was an update to an internal stabilizer in the windows. Mine had scratches and issues with noise when wet - they replaced the stabilizers with the new style (my car is a 2013) and it has helped tremendously.

That might help!

Those are on my shopping list I sorta jacked @frs10's thread for now but am working towards what is turning out to be a doozy of a DIY. It won't be for the faint-of-heart because window alignment is about as tricky as hanging the door itself. Thanks for your input!
