Head Bolts

If pulling the heads off my FA-20 engine are the head bolts re-usable?

Look up the fastening procedure for installation. If it's TTY (torque to yield), they must be replaced. I'd replace them regardless or go with studs.

Well, Lunatic, old humfrz is going to back off my previous post.

What I said was 1940-50 mechanics.

However, after doing a little reading:

http://www.acl.co.nz/wp-content/uplo...-Headbolts.pdf

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2001...rque-to-angle/

I would error on the side of caution and figure the OEM head bolts were TTI fastened and use new bolts for your rebuild.

Bubba says to ..... screw it and use the same old bolts ......

In reality, if my FR-S's engine needed that much work ..... I'd trade the car in for a new one .......

I have had one local engine builder tell me they are torque to yield. So new bolts it is. And if going new bolts He said stock bolts are not the best and advised just going with ARP bolts. So if needed, ARP it will be.

If you're pulling the heads anyway, ARP bolts/studs are cheap insurance.

Not always, and many times require re-torquing after a period of time or heat cycles.

The shop manual will tell you whether they need to be replaced, usually with an 'R' designation beside the part number, or if they are reusable. IF they are reusable, there will likely be a value for maximum allowable elongation, but since you didn't measure them before assembly, I would advise you buy new ones, document their overall lengths before assembly, and you may then be able to reuse those ones next time.

I would always recommend new head studs.

In the EJ series engines the headbolts are TTY...I have heard of people reusing them with no issues. I'm not sure if the FA's are TTY.

If it were my motor and I had it torn down that far I would just opt for a new OEM set or ARP replacements just for piece of mind.
