Sold some computer stuff to a guy who lives in BC. Checked my email last night, he made a paypal claim against me, saying I sold him a defective item. Dude wants a refund for it, which I'm fine with, since I know that the thing I sold him works and I'll be able to sell it locally without issue.

He ended up asking for a $31 refund. Luckily for me, the invoice he paid listed that item at $10 bucks. I wonder if it'll even be worth his time to send it back. Or maybe he'll ask to return everything he bought, in which case, I will not be happy, since he admitted to damaging the screen of the monitor he bought from me.

Is it one of your keyboards? perhaps it's a typo as the keys don't work so he can't type the correct figure...

This is the new eBay "problem" since they've changed their policies to protect the buyer a bit more. People claim perfectly good parts are broken on delivery in hopes you ask not to return them since the seller has to pay the return shipping.

I had this happen recently with a Volvo window register I sold. We had purchased it for SonHawk's '98 Volvo, but the car was totaled before we could install it. The part had been bench tested by both the salvage yard and later by me, so I knew it worked.

Buyer claimed that after spending money to have it installed it was determined to be non-functional and wanted a refund. My ad clearly said it was used/bench tested but sold with no warranty and no return if installed, but I said if the buyer would return it I would refund their money. eBay sided with the buyer, but did say they had to ship it back, at my cost. Buyer never shipped it back, so eBay closed the case.

Its an NZXT Hue+, so basically a fancy RGB light controller. Its notoriously a gigantic PITA to get working, it took me a couple days of troubleshooting to get it started. So, the guy clearly didn't read up on the thing, and he clearly didn't put the time in to figure it out.

It kinda pissed me off to see that "are you in a hurry? Just refund the buyer without him needing to ship it back" like are you kidding me? That's ridiculous.

I'm hoping I don't need to cover return shipping, since this was a private sale and PayPal was just the payment method.

In any case, between this transaction, and another transaction that involved shipping (which admittedly had a better outcome) but I'm done shipping. Everything will be done in person in the future, and tested if practical in person so that buyers can't pull this shit.

I'd have a bit more faith in the guy if he didn't damage the monitor's screen, but at this point I think he's just trying to get out of paying for things.

Yep. They put the rule in place due to the very large number of buyer complaints about defective, wrong or just plain fraudulent items being sold but they swung the pendulum too far the other way. There needs to be a happy medium someplace but when everything goes in favour of the buyer that ideal can not be met. I find it odd they went so far in the buyer's direction when it is the seller that is actually paying for the service.

To be honest, I understand the why of it, but I don't agree with just how far it goes to protect the buyer. In my case, I got called a "fucking piece of shit" via email by the buyer, because he wasn't able to get the item working, then saw a dispute shortly after. I know for a fact that the item was working, since it was working when I removed it from my computer.

But, I've responded, said my piece, and we'll see what happens. The really shitty thing is that PayPal has taken $300 from my account just because of the dispute, without anything even being decided.

Also, I keep using "dispute" but it hasn't been escalated yet, right now it's just at the "the buyer has a problem, let's deal with it" stage.

I don't have a load of experience selling stuff but we did sell a bunch of collectors plates for my mother in law.
One woman wanted her money back (but keep the plate) because she claimed that the number on the back did not match what we had posted. EBay reviewed it and all the pics and said that it was exactly what we had said it was so ruled in our favour. PayPal however still gave her the money back after the EBay decision. We had to fight for weeks to get them to reverse it.

See, it's that kind of stuff that makes me want to stop using PayPal all together, but it's so universal, and everywhere uses it for payments.

As a buyer, I rarely complain, unless something won't even turn on, or is the wrong item. But, I'm also able to accept that sometimes when buying used, things won't be perfect and there are steps to take before actually paying to ensure said item works.

And here I am grumbling about having to return a new set of fogs back to the Hella distributor because one of the lamps is missing a clip.

Kinda puts things into perspective.

Rather deal with that than some fuckwad who's trying to possibly rip me off.

I think my dad missed me. I was supposed to drive to my parents house today (an hour and five minutes or so), get my dad's truck, drive back home, get my motorcycle, then drive it to my parents place, then drive home.

Pops called me this morning and said "don't worry, I'll come to you instead and save you the drive."

What a fantastic dude.
