Education is definitely helpful and colleges like Phoenix/DeVry/Heald/etc. are all for-profit so tuition is going to be real high.
The thing with IT, though, is employers value those that have experience and the correct attitude over someone with a lot of paper credentials.

Edit: If you're considering making the IT industry a career, you may want to get a management-focused degree rather than a specialized IT degree. Reason for this is the more you move up in the IT ladder, the more likely you're going to be managing other people and becoming involved with purchasing decisions that affect the core business. When you start getting more responsibility, it's often desirable to have a formal education in management.
Oh, and it doesn't hurt to know how management/finance thinks when they're constantly whining about how much IT spends.

Back in the Windows Server 2000 days, people were studying for their MCSEs without actually using Server2k in a live environment. So you had a bunch of people knock out a bunch of tests, get certified, and not know how to practically apply any of their knowledge. You had these "paper MCSEs" floating around and it made a lot of people in the industry realize that you need to focus on someone's proven ability rather than what's written down on paper.

I have a degree in IT along with several certifications, and the strongest aspect of my resume is my experience. The other stuff is secondary to that. And since you do have to start off somewhere, look for entry-level IT jobs.
When applying for IT positions, try to cater your resume and cover letter to specifically cover IT-oriented tasks you've done at prior employers, and list your general IT experience & hobbies involving technology on your resume. Make it field-focused rather than general. That should help make up for lack of professional experience in IT.
This strategy has worked well for me and a few others I know.

I did send out a few emails and I'll see what I get back. If I get any leads, I'll PM ya.

So.... I was filling up in Fresno tonight and this red BRZ pulls up on the adjacent pump. I tell the guy "nice ride!" and get the reply "yea, better than yours since Subaru has all wheel drive and turbos."

I... I'm still not sure if trolling or stupid.
