We had a recall a few years ago to reseal and retorque a timing chain tensioner. 4 cyl twin turbo diesel, timing components on the back of the motor.

The tensioner is on the right rear of the engine, above and behind both turbochargers. The catalyst/DPF is behind and below. You would have to move some serious oil to reach either one.

Here's the explanation from the recall, fire is on there, but down the list.

"Over time, this might lead to loosening of the chain tensioner, as well as an ineffective sealing ring seal for engine oil. As a consequence, leakage of engine oil onto the road might pose a threat to traffic. Should the oil leakage reach a certain amount the engine might stall. Oil leakage in the presence of an ignition source could also increase the risk of a potential fire. "

So I have my car in the shop now. But I'm concerned as well, very seriously considering trading for a corvette or possibly a 124 spider

You'd be going down the same route though wouldn't you? Fiat working on a Mazda.

31 emails and 54 calls later, Toyota has agreed to repair my engine. They are not replacing the gone with a new one. Comes with a 12mo warranty. I'll update as I learn more, they said I'd receive I receipt for all parts when I pick up the car.

Better than nothing just wish it wasn't so hard to get them to take action, and it ruined my relationship with this dealership. Keep fighting guys!

Nothing is stopping them from making the same mistakes all over again though. I know they have been playing dumb with you but hopefully they know where they went wrong and will learn from it when doing your rebuild and others going forward.

Good luck!

Congrats! Didn't the initial repair come with a 12mo warranty? I know mine did.

Yeah, I feel this way too, but it's better than nothing. If it happens again, I'll likely just buy a new built block and be done with the heartache.

It did. This ended up being a key fighting point for them. Because it wasn't a VALVE SPRING that broke, the warranty was effectively useless. In their eyes, the warranty is only for the exact part, and has nothing to do with work involved in the remedy.

Hey guys,

Long story short, dealership says my valves are shot and says it is not covered under warranty with the valve spring recall. I am unsure what to say right now as they are stating it will be $1500 in parts alone. Any suggestions?

Tell them to do the recall work only and to go to hell with the valves.

Kind of reminds me of tire shops saying, "we can't align your car unless you get new tires" even though your tires aren't even close to the wear bars and even if they were corded it has literally no impact at all on the alignment or ability to do the job. Always looking to make a buck.

Sorry i wasn’t specific. They already performed the recall service. They were able to tell me my headgaskets were bad prior to completing the work. So i said with 90k miles go ahead and replace it. But how would they not know my valves were bad prior to working on the valve springs? Like i said, i don’t know too much about motor work but i was already told they ripped me off with the hg replacement and don’t wanna get ripped off again.
