Measuring from what? Ground to highest point of wheel wells?

The car is 300+ miles away so I'm limited on being able to measure at the moment.

My son has a very low mileage '13 FR-S on TRD Springs. He recently moved to college where there are more elevation changes than where we live. Parking lots ingress/egress especially. He is complaining that the car is bottoming out often at school. My rough measuring is his car is sitting about 1.75 inches lower than stock.

Will installing Coilovers allow him to raise the car higher than current height (close to stock height)? Also will they allow him to lower it back to a similar height when he wants?

I'm looking at the Tein line and favoring the Flex Z's over the Street Basis and Basis models because I won't need to remove existing top hats. I need to be able to turn his car around quickly and would like to do it ourselves as a father-son learning project. Possibly Thanksgiving week when he comes home.

Suggestions welcome!

The more important question is... are you interested in adopting another son... with kind of high mileage?

Like others have said, I also suggest you just put the stock suspension back on the car, so as your son can focus on his studies -

We did not buy the car new and don’t have the stock parts to revert back to. It’s an open option to purchase new OEM suspension and install. For only a few bucks more I could also put on coilovers. Thus the line of questions.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I’ll have him measure and we’ll make a choice. Long term he would also like aftermarket wheels. While researching those options i am reading that coilovers give him more choices. You can probably tell that I’m leaning towards the fun vs the practical. He’s only young once.

You can find used like new stockers on here for cheap. CL too.

There's a HUGE difference between fun and ruining a cars performance with large ass heavy wheels.

I can guarantee any wheel that would require coils for him are way too big for what he needs.

17x8 +35
MOR
E than enough width for a stock power car.

Thanks, that is hugely helpful information to have. Got to say the plethora of wheel dimensions used by people on this board is almost insane.

You'll likely be disappointed with cheap coilovers in the long run too.

IMO get stock springs or RCE Yellow springs and some light wheels in either 17x7 or 17x8. I've got my stock springs, but I imagine shipping them to you would be more expensive than just buying local.

You should be able to find stock used parts (shock & Spring) for around $100 - $200. Just springs for probably less. Try the LA. FRS club on Facebook. Good way to find parts local

Case in point $50 for springe, boots and bump stops $50.

Bag it. Done right, you can keep the handling, along with adjust ability. Bags aren't just for the stance crew.
