They improved it with the 964, and for a while now (since the 993 I think?) they have multilink rear suspension.
911 never had strut rear suspension, I don't think...

But yeah, you have to get the geometry *RIGHT* whatever the suspension design. My '11 Cayman's rear strut suspension has better geometry than my '01 S2000's "superior" double-wishbone setup (with unfortunate, ridiculous designed-in rear toe-change with bump).

Correct, geometry is critical. Which is why it’s very easy to make any setup handle well at the cost of comfort; limit the suspension travel to ~1.5” and dial the static camber in (the Porsche method). You can’t have them roll around like a Miata and keep the contact patch in good shape, but when you’re on stiff suspension anyway, it matters much less.

And you’re right about the 911, I was thinking of the 986/987 rear strut suspension.

The twins fit in the S - segment at Sports Coupe

What are the twins classed as within that segment then, sports car? GT coupe? Super mini? Sports sedan? Sports saloon?, hell you could even fight the fight for Pony car if you are from America....

Some wicky thing - "Pony car is an American car classification for affordable, compact, highly styled coupés or convertibles with a sporty or performance-oriented image.[1][2] Common characteristics include rear-wheel drive, a long hood, a short decklid, a wide range of options to individualize each car and use of mass-produced parts shared with other models".

If you go off some typical guidelines, they could fit in between super mini and sports sedan.

They are not really a "sports car" because it is not a roadster, it has back seats and a fixed roof.

So, what is it then, does it matter, before 1970 the 911 would have been classed as a GT Coupe? Maybe.., but, after 1970 marketing decided they liked the name "sports car" better, and so it came to pass.

Hell, every generation that passes changes the names of things to something "more hip".

Classification is simple, but then cool kids and marketing walk in the door and complicate things.

Lets call them GT coupes, the name GT86 gives it away. Sadly though, they don't actually match up with the specs of what a GT is, marketing and cool kids strike again.

If you need to name them, call the Sports Coupes, after that it gets tricky, and pointless.

Opinions may vary

While not the next Gen 86, there is an article today on The Drive "quoting" Tetsuya Tada about the possibility of bringing back a mid-engine car. This would be the likely candidate to replace the 86 for me rather than a MK2 86.

And by replace I mean for me personally, I am assuming there will be MK2 86 of some sort. There would have to be for the "3 brothers" to come to fruition.

Depends if it's an ugly roadster, or an awesome targa top.

why would they upgrade to the 2.4L motor?

that doesn't track with anything that's actually happened with the car since it's inception.

It might be their only chance to pass future emissions at and keep the car reasonably priced. A larger motor will emit less Nox than a smaller one at the same power

More torque I guess. It is still only a rumour, but reading the article it is only a small bump in power but a bigger increase in torque.
