Difference between GT86 and FR-S? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Howdy!

Norwegian GT86 owner here.. I`ve been looking for a supercharger kit a while now, but as far as I can see theres a difference between the FRS and the GT86 engine bay. Does any of you know what that is? Its a bit frustrating, since most of the supercharger kits are from the US.

If it`s a left hand drive like in the US, I would think it should be nearly the same car. The GT86 can be equipped more then the FRS here and probably resembles more like a BRZ in terms of equipment the the FRS. If the kit fits an FRS and BRZ, and it`s the same drive side, I can`t think of why it wouldn`t fit. But I would wait until someone more qualified answered hehehe.

Also, what do you find looks different? Try to get a pick of the differences if you can and that could help as well to spot something that could cause an issue in fitment.

Jupp, I know about som small cosmetical differences, but Im thinking of the engine bay mostly. I bought som hood shockers from ebay, and they didnt fit for example.

I wouldn't be surprised if you sent a crate of you guy's nice salmon over there to Japan, they would gladly ship you over some kind of FI kit. Good luck OP.

It's possible the U.S. kits wouldn't fit because possibly the U.S. cars and the European models may have different emissions equipment. Just a guess I really don't know this for sure.

Can you elaborat please? I think its a mechanical issue.. the only difference I can see is that you motsly drive on 92 octane, right? We only have 95 and 98 here in Norway.

The octane levels are actually the same. The numbers are different because they are measured differently.

master brake cylinder and battery are swapped. should be bout it. i could see how that may cause some clearance issues.

Different regulations in different countrys may mean that my FR-S in the U.S.A. may have a different sensor(s) or more or less parts on the engine due to differing emission requirements. That would mean there is a mechanical difference although subtle.

Still I want to re-state I do not know for a fact, what if any actual differences there are between U.S. and Euro 86s.

The spring rates are different. Also, Interior features, headlights (obviously things available on the special releases here). Some territories have lower optioned cars that have 16" wheels and possibly open diff (base Japanese trim has open).

Also, the 98RON you have is equivilant to our 95 octane (which is hard to find). Your 95 is close to our 92-93 octane

Engine bay wise, physical modifications can be limited due to LHD vs RHD models due to steering rack. A LHD GT86 engine bay should accept same mods as FRS and vice versa.

The spring rate for the suspension is slightly different. But overall it is pretty much the same vehicle. The GT86 has softer ride compare to the FRS.

Stiffer front springs than FR-S and softer rears. Comfort is a wash with that, hard to say.

There is no difference which may prevent any SC kit, which fits FR-S, from fitting a EUDM GT86. Difference under the hood between MT and AT is noticable. Between FR-S / BRZ / GT86 / 86 - not (if they all have the steering wheel on the same side). Sizes of the battery may slightly vary but that's it.
