I've been using my frs as a daily driver even through this last storm that went through with stocks and two 70lb bags of sand in my trunk. It handled pretty good considering. The key to everything is to drive safely and be aware of your surroundings. Live in Milwaukee and commute to Chicago.

I go back to stock suspension, stock wheels, and Wintersport M3's. Great tires for the winter. High speed rated with good sidewalls so I don't feel like I am driving around a minivan and for the rest of the time the snow is cleared off the roads they are fun.

Drove through snowstorms on the highway and 4 inches fresh snow on back country roads with relatively no problem.

I just purchased a set of Blizzaks LM-32 and I'm planning to get steelies for them ($70 a piece). I'm being charged around $460 for the steelies and installing the tires on the rims. Also, included are prices for lug nuts(DT say that it is their policy to put in new lug nuts, and the existing ones on my car will not work with the steelies), labor and ripping off TPMS from my stock wheels and on to this.

I have a feeling that I'm overpaying over here. Could you guys let me know how much you paid for these services?
Is there a reason I need to use different lug nuts when going from the stock wheels to 16" steelies? I switched over about a month ago, using the original nuts, and haven't had any issues.

I didn't have too many problems with mine with all the snow. Its currently stuck though... not stuck for good, but stuck till I shovel the big plow drifts out of the way so I can get out of my parking spot (street parking, forgot to dibbs the one I shoveled out Sunday to go grocery shopping).

What the people at DT told me was that when you are using steelies, it is recommended to use their 'specific' lug nuts as the stock ones start loosening after sometime. I'm not sure of that, but I decided to go with their advice. Frankly, I wouldn't mind driving with the stock lug nuts.

I think the reason they advise that is because the steelies fit differently and their surface area near the bolts might be different. I'm not sounding very clear, but as I said, this is only my 'theory'.

i bought the continental extreme winter contact, and have not had any problems with traction. for me, the issue is the front bumper. the car is so low that i am afraid that unplowed snow will hit and damage the front bumper.

As long as I get to have my way, she will never see a snowflake. Snug as a bug in a rug, on jack stands in my garage.

If you get stuck on ice just turn the trac control off so you can rock it back and forward.

Been up all night contemplating whether to sell the car or not ..
This is my 3rd winter on coilovers with snowtires in Calgary Canada but somehow this snowfall bothers me a little more..
We had our first decent snowfall and i usually do have weight in the back but this time got caught offguard with only snowtires .. Blizzak LM-60.
Been reading thru this thread and seems I could may be try more aggressive tires ?
I could careless for dry road condition performance of the winter tires..
Whatever allows me to get going from stand still in soft dry snow thats ankle deep...
But seeing some of the heros getting thru some serious snow storms in this thead does make me feel a little better though...

Sorry for the resurrection, but I want to keep this fire alive.
I live in Vermont in the middle of the snow belt for the state. I've had WRXs, and AWD BMWs. I've had a Jeep with 4WD and an old Ranger with manual locking hubs. I've driven tow trucks and RWD flatbeds.

At some point I had a 1992 325i that I really couldn't avoid driving in the snow (oddly enough, I had a 3000GT VR4 but that was equipped with 275/35 R18 Falken Azenis tires; not really a winter machine. I put some snow tires on the BMW and drove. To my surprise, I loved it. Sure, starting from a stop is all pedal control, and no amount of wishing will get you moving faster, though having an LSD helps. Every car I've driven in the snow for winter since has been RWD. I've driven through about 12" of unplowed snow at 40 MPH to not get body hung, and still had the grip available ( with some tricky footwork) to make it home without being stuck (once I stopped I was done though, I spent 2 hours shoveling my car/driveway out. ended up being about 3 feet of snow by the end of the 2 day snowstorm last year).

I am hear to tell any naysayer, any person with disbelief who thinks they need AWD to get through snow, you'll be surprised. I've never used extra weight in my cars to get around (in the Ford Ranger I had to. It was the V6 and didn't have the chassis balance) and am confident that with good tires and a delicate foot, you'll be ok.
Choose your battles, don't stop at the bottom of a hill and if the road is icy, keep as many tires on snow as possible; snow is less slippery than ice so long as you're not spinning on top of it.

Practice pedal control with any spare time you have available if you're worried about driving in snow or on ice. Most importantly of all, keep a very, very large distance between you and the car in front of you. You may be professional level at braking, but if the car in front of you is not and their vehicle somehow stops more quickly than yours, you're in trouble. Our cars have a limited slip (viscous, but it still works) and with good judgment, the proper tires outfitted, and your head in the right place, you only need to respect the conditions to get through snow in our cars.
