So that you can discretely dim the lights, indicating to @Ultramaroon , that it's time to quit eating.

Now that brings to mind a back in the day story. My buddy and I were invited to attend a luncheon in one of the executive dining rooms of our corporate HQ.

Since we were country boys, we arrived early. They made us a couple of bloody Marys and seated us at the table. While sitting there, we noticed this strange looking figurine sitting in the middle of the table.

We took turns picking it up to try to figure out what it was. Every time one of us picked it up a dining room attendant came in and asked us what we wanted. We said that we didn't want anything.

It finally dawned on us that the "thing" was somehow signaling the staff we wanted service. The takeaway of this story is don't leave country boys alone in a room at a corporate HQ -

No-no-no - it wasn't one of those -

Even us old farm boys knew what a cow bell looked and sounded like.

This thing didn't make any sounds - it was spooky. What in the early 80s could do that? -

Well now, it might have been something like that, but how did it do it without any wires coming out of it?
