My subaru dealer diagnosed this problem on my car. The symptoms for me was the burnt oil smell when engine is hot and car is not moving.
They said the leak is very tiny, but little drops just falls onto the echaust manifold, that's why it smells so badly.
Mechanics said they will have to drop the engine to fix the leak (approx 10 hours work).
Fortunately, I purchased a warranty insurance when buying my car second-hand, and yes, they will pay the bill!

Add me to the valve cover leak list. At first I thought it was the EASY to fix Cam Plate. Took 3 tries to get that thing leak free only to *DISCOVER* the major leak was the valve cover... which sprays oil onto the catalytic convertor/header.

It's not a ton of oil, but get this... oil hits cat... vaporizes. Running the heater, it sucks in the outside air... the OIL burned outside air and fills the cabin with oil smoke and smells. :/

I have been smelling burning oil for a while and thought it was a leak in my catch can. I took it apart, it's tight now. But by now, that oil on the header pipe below it should have burned off. The smell comes from the passenger side when the engine is hot.

Well tonight I took a flashlight (in the day with glare I couldn't see anything) and looked everywhere and found gunky oily dirty nastiness all over the aluminum floor and I felt some up under the engine too. But on the DRIVER side- I don't know why the smell comes up from the passenger side. 31k miles, I guess I am headed to the dealership where I bought it for some warranty work. I'll probably do like @GRiver423 and have them do the spark plugs while the engine is out.

I just hope they don't give me a hard time about my mods. For the engine I have done a catch can and oil pressure gauge. Exhaust and intake too but none of this will affect this leak.

Does anyone know if it's possible replacing the silicone without taking out the motor? Wondering if I can remove the silicone just by lifting the motor a little

I don't want to get my phone covered with oil but this is where the leak is happening on the driver's side. I can't see where it's coming from.

Turns out it's a timing cover leak and as I type this it's being fixed under warranty.

I'll have the car back tomorrow

Make sure they use the grey stuff. I replaced mine myself told them exactly what I needed and they gave me the black stuff sadly

It was not the timing cover, it was the cam cover as it turns out.

I got it back last night. The tech was sloppy and got a lot of oil ont he header which smoked like hell for the first few miles driving off from the dealership. I had to bitch the guy out too because when they had the aluminum skid plate off the lazy shit didn't even clean it off. But he did clean it off and it smells a lot better after a drive.

They used blue stuff (according to the paperwork).

I think i have a similar leak @ 25K, same black gunk in that area. I already replaced the cam plate and i guess it wasn't actually the plate... think the dealer will give me trouble for this? i can always put the OEM part back on i guess but its a PITA sealing these. I took the car in about 8K miles ago and they said it was engine detailing dressing leaking onto the manifold (hah). I will try again soon to get this resolved. Only have about 4 months of warranty left. This time i will insist the service advisor sits in my car after its warmed up with the air on and take a wiff of that burning smell.

FWIW I never smelled burning oil inside the car. Only outside on the passenger side.
