NEW Subaru 086A BRZ STi impression and info

From Holiday Auto via 7tune: http://www.7tune.com/subaru-086a-sti/

The regular Subaru 086A is expected to use Subaru's EJ20 flat 4 boxer engine with D4-S direct/port injection, Aisin 6 speed tranny, and Lexus IS rear differential. Projected power has been anywhere from 160ps to 200ps.

Holiday Auto (via 7tune) now reports that the Subaru 086A STi Version will use the EJ25 2.5L engine which produces 240-250ps. An EJ25 turbo version is also in consideration. Any Subaru 086A STi model will receive wider fenders all around to accomodate beefier tires/wheels.

No timing has been confirmed yet, but the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show or 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon may be good guesses.

Damn that's a nice looking photochop. Love the extra body work and of course the EJ25 engine news I assume toyota would also have an EJ25 version (maybe TRD version)?

Toyota better not let Subie bring out the only good version of this car

Of course... if that does happen, everyone who buys the Toyota variant will be doing a motor swap within a year...

I was already excited about a small, lightweight successor to the hatchiroku. This makes me even more excited. This is will be the most excited I've been about an upcoming car for as long as I can remember!

No mention of drivetrain with that STI story, eh? I wonder if this means it will still be RWD or AWD? I actually hope it remains RWD, if only because I want this car to remain true to its AE86 heritage, and not be bogged down by further weight...

I really think the Toyota will be RWD and Subaru STi will be AWD. Not only is that Subaru's claim to fame but they probably also want to differentiate the two cars besides just the exterior.

Good point about the extra weight for AWD. How much more would it weigh?

I can't say for certain but it would certainly add at least another 100 lbs. Tough to compare since all of Subie's models currently employ symmetrical AWD anyway.

100 lbs isn't that big a deal (especially with an extra 50 hp under the hood), but it's not too hard to go from a "lightweight" corner carver to a more bloated vehicle. Then again, STIs weight between over 3200 lbs and no one seems to complain about those things, so even if this car weighs in at 3000 lbs, if it has 250 hp, (poss even more with boost) then it'll still be killer.

While the regular Subaru 086A is expected to be exactly the same as the Toyota version albeit with subtle exterior/interior styling differences, it’s the high performance STi version that’s getting the most attention now that the FT-86 Concept has broken cover ahead of this month’s Tokyo Motor Show. The standard 086A of course utilizes Subaru’s EJ20 flat-four boxer engine with D4-S direct injection, an Aisin 6-speed gearbox and a rear differential as used on the Lexus IS250/350. The rumored output of 200PS has been quoted once again as to be “almost certain” but a conflicting rumor from another source sets the output as being low as 160PS. Nevertheless, the STi Version should answer people’s prayers for more power.

Holiday Auto (HA) reports that the STi Version will use the EJ25 2.5L engine that’s expected to produce between 240 – 250PS which is enough, HA say, to turn the 086A into a true performance car. An EJ25 turbo also hasn’t been ruled out, it seems that the Toyota/Subaru partnership have gone to great lengths to listen to what customers want and if the voices are loud enough, may come through with a boosted 086A Sti. In keeping with the Impreza WRX STi, the 086A STi Version will apparently get wider front and rear guards to accommodate a wider track with wider wheels and tires. The know-how gathered from tuning the suspension for the WRX STi will be used to improve the 086A’s handling characteristics, although HA stop short of saying the parts will be directly carried over. We should also expect some additional STi only aero parts such as a unique front bumper and rear trunk spoiler to give the STi Version a more motorsports inspired look.

Although it’s not confirmed yet, there’s a strong possibility the Subaru 086A STi Version will be shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show or not long after at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon and will hit showrooms shortly thereafter.
If Subaru does come out with an STi model, I wonder what the base price will be? Hopefully the Sti model is not priced similar to the Impreza STi.

There is really no purpose to an AWD car unless you are rallying... FR works just fine for road or track.

If suby is coming out with an sti version with awd it's going to cost around 40k. The current sti is already at 35 and also coupes are generally pricer than their four door counterparts.
