woosh sound at 3000 rpm

Hey all,

I own a 2013 BRZ which I've had since new. Lately I have noticed a (pardon the poor description) a momentary Whoosh sound at approx 3000 RPM. This occurs in all gears and is quite loud when the engine is cold and diminishes as the engine warms up. I cant imagine that I would not have heard this in the past.

This sounds deliberate. Does anything in particular happen at 3000 RPM ?

Could this be an Exhaust thing ? or Transmission ?

Sound does not occur in neutral only when in gear and moving.

By momentary I mean about 1 sec in duration.

Recently had an oil change I don't know if the sound was there before that.

O.K. Thats All the facts I have.

All opinions welcome
Thanks

Is it at full throttle, or regardless? What transmission do you have? What modifications do you have done, if anything?

Could be the sound tube, which channels intake noise into the passenger side footwell. To me, it does sound like swoosh sound (i like it a lot haha)

Thanks for your quick replies,

1) The sound occurs at 3000 rpm when accelerating normally.
2) This is a 6 speed Standard Transmission.
3) The car is stock with No modifications.

Would it be possible to record this sound and post a video?

Solved

Thought I'd get back to all with the solution to this issue.
As this was more a nuisance than anything else I finally got around to actually taking this to my local mechanic for a look see. After about a 30 second ride with me in the car my mechanic announced " I know what that is"

Directly above the exhaust pipe about midway down the car there is a heat shield. This shield is just millimeters above the pipe. In my case the shield had broken / rotted or otherwise come loose. During acceleration and at a specific resonance. the broken shield would temporarily vibrate causing the Wooshe sound. Once the vehicle heated up and all the metals expanded. the sound dissipated.

The final solution was a $3.00 hose clamp placed around the pipe and shield. My Mechanic didn't even charge me for the effort.

All is now well

Thanks for all your comments

Glad you got it figured out! Sometimes the easiest thing to do with a car is just enjoy the nuances. If you let every little thing get to you, you may forget to enjoy the other 98% of the car

Good rule of thumb is that if there's any weird sound that happens during acceleration only start with the exhaust
