2017 Fiat 124 Spider

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2015/...r/?intcmp=hpff

Fiat has shifted its American renaissance into high gear with the return of the 124 Spider.
The two-seat convertible was co-developed with Mazda and shares its platform with the latest MX-5 Miata.
The Fiat gets its own bodywork, with several touches that hearken back to the original 124 Spider. These include a hexagonal grille, rear fenders that sweep into the doors, rectangular taillights, a chrome windshield frame, and a twin power dome hood.
Under that hood, you’ll find the1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder currently used in the Fiat 500 Abarth, here delivering 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which makes it more powerful than the Miata’s engine. It is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.
Inside, the Fiat and Mazda are largely identical, and the 124 Spider will offer a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, blind-spot monitor, back up camera and heated seats.

Pricing for the 124 Spider has not yet been announced. Mazda will build it for Fiat in Japan. The Fiat was originally planned to be the new Alfa Romeo Spider, but parent company FCA has since decided that all Alfa Romeos will be made in Italy, so that brand will get its own reborn Spider in the coming years.

Very very interesting car. When I first saw the pictures I immediately thought that it looks exactly like the new miata. I read shortly below to learn that it's a collaboration between Mazda and Fiat and uses the new MX-5 chasis but with the Fiat Abarth 500's 1.4L turbocharged engine YES!
Basically Fiat is finally coming out and making a turbocharged miata in a way. Isn't the newest miata the lightest yet? I'm hoping they keep it the same weight as the new miata just due to the fact that this car will haul ass with abosolutely no weight and a turbocharged engine I can easily see this being a great car to mod for the track and get some extra power out of that 160hp 184lb-ft turbocharged engine. Which is already more than the new miata comes with.

Very excited about the possibility of this car.

Those seats look firmer and more bolstered than the ND.

The styling is a HUGE miss for me. But I admit it looks the worst in black, better in white and blue that I've seen. Still a miss though.

People who like turbo power (people who aren't me) will be all over this, especially if it sounds like the 500 Abarth, which there is every reason to think it will.

I read a report somewhere today that said the 124 is 100LBs heavier than the MX-5 so that is going to slow it down a bit, make it a bit harder to stop and maybe not quite and nimble.

The styling looks "tacked on" to me but maybe that is because I saw the MX-5 first. I prefer the Mazda.

If the starting price is anywhere under $30k, the cost excuse for not making a BRZ STI version goes out the window.

I love the idea of the car. The ND is a great platform to start from. The front end looks like a squished Mini Cooper. I would have to agree, from the pictures black is not the color for the car. That's coming from a person who thinks almost every car looks better in black.

Tyhe Fiat has not earned any respect in my book due to the 500. I know that they are huge headaches. Know a couple of people who have purchased them (not the Abarth) and have had nothing but issues I like the Abarth, but would never buy one. I don't know how the reliability is on the Abarth 1.4, but if it is good, it will be one hell of a sports car considering the price is right.

On the side of 100lbs heavier. As long as Mazda has been able to make changes to the chassis specifically to this to get weight balance as good as the Miata that big extra bump in torque will make you forget all about that extra fat!

The rear is a slight improvement over the Miata, but the front with those rings in the headlights/combined with odd front grilles do not look good.

Tis a shame...

Not really, I like NB tail more.

Thing is I'm sure I saw that exact taillight somewhere before....but i just can't remember on what.

Nevertheless I think this will be a popular swap for ND owners in future if they can get one. xD

The Abarth renderings in white with red highlights look interesting. Dare I say make it look more masculine...
