I hate how all the companies are moving towards that stupid radio / info screen design. I know it is supposed to increase visibility and packaging, but damn....just slap it in the dash!! Mazda, I thought was bad....now the new Altima is the current top offender (IMO) but this might beat them all.

I've not driven one, but I'm assuming it has a "dark mode" like a moving map does at night.

As far as design, it isn't pretty, but a tablet up high is better than down low. Maybe when autonomous cars become more of a standard and the reliability is virtually flawless then the screen will be moved lower and integrated with the dash because taking your eyes off the road won't be an issue. For now, this design seems better to me. It allows for a cheaper vehicle, and it allows for a control unit that is easily replaceable if it fails, which is probably cheaper to replace/reproduce than something that is integrated.

I would not buy a Model 3 (or an ICE equivalent) for this one reason, everything else being equal.

Tesla is definitely not the first to do this, as you mentioned. Toyota, Honda, GM, etc have all done it. They actually claim it is a better position to have it. The focal point is slightly less extreme. The contrast between a dark dash and the bright exterior is less extreme too. The distance the eye has to travel is usually less. The head doesn't have to move as much. But that is probably all marketing BS . The real advantage is the car is cheaper to build with a symmetrical dash for LHD and RHD.

I think it is a better position for the non-critical instruments usually in that panel (radio, HVAC, map, etc) I have no issue. For your primary instruments though its a bad location IMO. That's OK, some cars have had their regular "steam" gauges in that location as well, and I wouldn't have bought them either.

Supposedly Ford went back to knobs and switches after people complained about an all touch interface. That is, one had to look away from the road to change air con controls. If you can't change basic functions like that without looking away from where you're going there is something wrong with the interface.

IT makes me wonder why no cars have an interface that is actually as fast and responsive as a smartphone, they always seem sooo laggy. Ford's Sync system apparently was bad for awhile. Cadillac's Cue system is laggy as hell. I had a Honda Fit with a touchscreen interface which was OK, but the volume slider was a touch slider and it was somewhat laggy and annoying at times. Im sure if the interfaces responded like a smartphone it wouldn't be so bad. I still prefer knobs/buttons though for some functions. |
