By "rich" they mean that the car is burning an AFR (air fuel ratio) that is heavy on the "fuel" part of the ratio.

In this case, a black, sooty deposit may show up on the tail pipe outlet.

Back-in-the-day, one could almost "measure" the AFR by looking at the inside of the tail pipe ....... if it was black, the engine was running rich, it was whitish, the engine was running "lean" ...... so, a light, smoke color deposit was "good".

The AFR could be changed by "adjusting" the carburetor(s) or the engine timing.

Today, I have no idea how the ECU (Engine Control Unit) alters the AFR.

However, someone in the know, will have to explain that to you ......

Thanks a lot man! Really appreciate the explanation. My tail tip is pretty much smoked black. The noise generator is indeed taking air away.

Just took a look at the K&N filter you mentioned, it can actually increase 5 HP, tested by ft86factory. And took a look at the Mishimoto intake hose @seito23 mentioned, it can increase 8 HP. That's kind of unbelievable! Seems to be better than most other products in the market and those two only cost just $200. Should I go with that?

find and purchase the correct filter
find the air box
figure out how to open it up
unpackage the new filter
anguish over if it has enough oil or too much oil
now, which way does it go in ....... frontwards/backwards .... upside down/right side up
why won't the air box cover close ....
worry that it has too much oil and it will gum up the air flow sensor thing
not enough oil and it will let in dirt and the engine will grind itself up

take it for a drive

YES! AT least 3 more HP and 2 ft lbs of torque, measures on your butt dyno .........

All for $40.00 and 15 minutes of labor ..........

Time for a nap!

Oh, I don't really know ....... I put in a K&N filter just so I could say I had a "performance mod" ......

I understand that the "slicker" inlet hose does make a difference ......but, I'm not convinced a butt dyno can register a difference.

My drop in air filter does cut a couple seconds off my time, for the trip up to the grocery store ..........

The K&K "oiled" filter has a coating of oil on the filtering media. As opposed to a "dry" filter like in your car now.

Some say the "oiled" filter lets in more air and filters out the bad particles as effectively.

If I lived in the desert or back a dusty road, I would stick with the dry filter.

Waaay back in the day, most all air filters were "oiled" filters. Then they went with dry filters ..... now we are back to oiled filters.......

Um.. That's interesting. We don't need to put oil on by ourselves right?

It comes pre oiled.

When it gets dirty, it should be cleaned and re-oiled (they are re-usable).

I believe there is a kit for that.

Back in the day, we used to clean them with kerosene, tap them off and let it dry in the sun ....... while we had a beer.

Then we would coat the wire mesh with 30 weight oil ...... and have another beer.

Today, ....... at least the beer would still work........
