I'm thinking the ECU would be in no condition to furnish a download without extraordinary effort, given the state of the front of that BRZ.

I am somewhat impressed at the relative integrity of the cabin given the magnitude of the damage.

The wheels might have gone that fast when the car went airborne. Unloaded and free spinning wheels can speed up pretty fast.

Heartless quote of the day..

"The 21-year-old driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He is expected to survive. Deputies reported smelling alcohol at the scene."

Maybe he wanted to be meme'd as another famous suicide?

Wouldn't trust the 145mph from a broken speedo though. Still, hope he makes it.

He just wanted to prove the 86 isn't a "slow" car.

I jut saw a video of a bog stock 86 on the Autobahn doing 149. 140 is completely reasonable but he must have had a hell of a long piece of road to do it on

Well, that's one way to part out.

BTW, event data recorder will reveal top speed, not that we'll ever know.

No. You need to study up on some physics.

Air resistance is the limiting factor versus peak power. Air resistance increases by the square of the speed increase. If you need 100bhp to do 100mph, you need 400bhp to do 200mph.

To go 10% faster, you need 1.1*1.1 the power. So to go from 100mph to 110mph you need 1.21 * the power. In the example of 100bhp for 100mph you would need 121bhp to do 110.

The highest FRS/GT86 speed that I have seen (indicated) in videos is 139mph. For it to do 160mph, it would need:

160/139 = 1.15 (15% faster)
1.15 * 1.15 = 1.32 (32% more power)
200BHP * 132% = 264bhp.

So... maybe in a Cosworth or other charged modded car, but no... not stock.

Also... it depends on how you look at the physics as to whether torque or power is the figure you want.

Air resistance is a force. Torque is a force. In a static moment in time it is the torque figure you are interested in. Particularly the torque at the wheels.

If you are looking at the given situation over a period of time....

Distance = Speed * Time
Force * Distance = Work done
Power = Work done / time taken.

So in that example, power is the figure you would want. They are ultimately (power and torque) the same thing expressed differently. You can always rearrange the equations to get one from the other.

Hey, thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge here. Sure, I will read more physics. Do you have any book recommendations?

Google will find you quite a lot. Key topics will be things like:

Work and power.
Force and mass.
Kinematics is the collective term for the physics of motion. Basic kinematics force/mass/energy/work/power, Newton's laws etc. is senior high school level physics.

Drag co-efficients and aerodynamics gets a lot more difficult. That would be University level physics.

Traction, grip and suspension calculations is more engineering, but again not likely to be easy to understand in physics terms as it's likely to be University level engineering.
