That whole "variable intake air filter" thing looks a little too "J.C. Whitney"ish to me. But hey, carbon fiber so it must be good. I think the power(if any) will probably come from the electronic box I see. But I'll keep an open mind about it.

It sure does look pretty. I am not convinced that an air filter needs any kind of valve to work wellthough. And i would have prefered it not to have the sound tube bit.

I believe the electronic box is a controller for opening and closing the valve.

I know some cars have something similar to that "variable intake" where it's partially closed to help low end torque and then fully opens for top end (5th gen prelude specifically) and it works.

Whether or not it's useful on the 86 is another question though.

If you're talking about the intake manifolds with two different length runners that switches? That is an entirely animal than what this air filter thingie is. The two stage manifold uses longer runners to help low end power, then switches over to a shorter runner to help high RPM power. This thing looks like the equilivalent of putting your hand over the intake and choking the inlet.

Is this their attempt to make a variable intake like on GSR Integras and Preludes? I thought it only works on the intake manifold side because its a runner length adjustment. If it actually helps with power gains they deserve a pat on the back for innovation lol.

No, I'm not talking about the manifold.
It was a resonator in the bumper that was controlled by a diaphragm which was connected to the IM via vac line.
