Advertising is expensive so it is reserved for appliance cars (or trucks really) where they want to sell them by the millions or top tier luxury cars where they only want to sell a handful and make scads of money off them. The 86/BRZ fall into a sort of marketing no mans land where they really don't want nor need to advertise them. The internet does all their marketing for them so why spend advertising dollars?

The 6 speed transmission is not bad, great for learning to drive manual on. The giant display is annoying. The engine I do like, it is very easy to work on, fairly straight forward, nice power delivery, although a little too quiet and revs up slower than I would like. I guess it is more powerful than previous corollas, but my 6 year old FRS easily feels much faster in terms of acceleration and obviously in another league in any sort of corner.

One crappy thing about the corolla is Im getting about 23-25mpg which Im disappointed with, it is the manual version, and sure I slam through gears and drive it with gusto but still my FRS which I drive similarly maybe a little more spirited I get like 22ish mpg. The engine in the corolla is one of the most thermally efficient engines on the market so I expect it will last a while. It also does all the normal hatchback stuff the wife needs, so not a bad car but no where near as cool as my twin, but also cost a decent amount less. I use it as my grocery fetcher and it is fun to do errands with, and yeah I peel out in that thing and it does put a smile on my face even with FWD, just not as big a smile as the FRS.

You must do a lot of city driving! I was averaging about 37 mpg in my 2019 Corolla. I get about 32 in the FR-S which I’m very happy with. I do a lot of highway driving with stop and go mixed in.

The new Corolla Hatchback is a really nice improvement for the Corolla brand. It handles nicely, has decent power, should be fuel efficient, and rides on a great chassis. The hatch has very small back seats and cargo area unless you fold the seats down. I think the sedan addresses those issues.

toyota/subaru finally make a car that handles better than anything else they claim has "great handling", and then they drop the ball advertising it's handling characteristics...

Advertising for the twins has been pretty much non-existent. I guess Toyota and Subaru assume anybody that will buy one already knows about it, so why put advertising dollars towards it. It’s still so weird they haven’t used it to at least show they are capable of making a fun car. But instead they make a mini movie commercial for the new Camry TRD trim. Show off the damn 86!!!

@JesseG quoting was not working for some reason.

I don't drive that often on the highway and it is mostly around town. I am a spirited driver, so I'm a little more aggressive driver than most. When I did a long trip in the corolla I got pretty good mileage. If I backed off the throttle and went super slow around town I bet I could get pretty good mileage but my area around town has high speed limits and long stretches of roads that go up hill as well as tons of traffic lights so that doesn't help me with the mileage, those factors plus the way I drive = not so great mileage but I think it is worth the extra cost to really enjoy the car how I want.

That makes perfect sense, the smiles are worth the lower fuel economy.
My Corolla had the CVT and I found it to be AWESOME for highway cruising, it’s really in its element there. For everything else it kind of sucks.
I think the 86/FR-S can get really good mileage if you want to, especially if you have a 6 speed. It’s always tempting to rev the car out though. I have a fairly long commute and I always try to find an opportunity to let the FR-S play

Trade 17 86 for a new Corolla?

I just took delivery of a 2019 Corolla hatchback (6MT, XSE). While it definitely isn’t in the same performance league as my old 2015 FR-S, I really am enjoying it for what it is. Handling is nice, engine is peppy, and it is a great looking little car. The tech is quite cool, too. Bonus: I actually get to drive it when my wife and daughter are along. I’m still eyeing an FR-S or Miata for a track car, but the Corolla is legit a great daily driver. My wife thinks 4 cars is excessive.

I'd agree had they not released a flood of Supra tv spots.

^ you're right. blue is nice on these new corollas (reminds me of neptune blue for the 86) but black on white wheels would def be better. or black on black / murdered out would be sick. that front grill is so mean. also i sat in one of these a few weeks back at the dealer, toyota interiors have gotten pretty good recently. based on what everyone says about it being great to drive/good handling, i wouldnt mind having one of these as a daily.

The Supra is a Toyota halo car which (contrary to what people would like to think) the 86 is not. They are not advertising them to try to sell more they are just trying to get people to visit dealerships so they can sell them a nice Camry or Tundra.
