Post Rumor: Scion FR-S TRD supercharger kit in development

Quote:
The Scion FR-S was just named the Hottest Sport Compact at the 2012 SEMA Show, and Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is apparently looking to make this car a little hotter. According to Car and Driver, TRD is close to coming up with a supercharger to fit to the car's 2.0-liter flat-four engine in order to squeeze out a little more performance. Currently, the FR-S produces 200 horsepower, but there's no guessing how much a supercharger could improve this figure.

With Subaru seemingly hard at work on a new turbo engine for the BRZ and even possibly a BRZ STI model, it is only logical for a force-fed FR-S to be in the works as well. Surprisingly, though, the report says that supercharger would be unique to the FR-S, but since the Scion and Subaru BRZ are mechanically identical, it isn't clear how this would be accomplished. TRD already offers plenty of upgrades for the FR-S such as exhaust, brake and suspension kits, and it offers a handful of superchargers for other models including the 5.7-liter V8 used in the Toyota Tundra and the 4.0-liter V6 used in the Tacoma.

Toyota Racing Development Looking Into Supercharger for Scion FR-S [2012 SEMA Show]

Quote:
Scion and Toyota’s in-house performance division, Toyota Racing Development (TRD), are looking into adding a supercharger to the list of upgrade parts available to the FR-S, we’ve learned. Scion’s booth at SEMA this year is packed with several unique takes on the FR-S—included this trio of awesome FR-S customs—and many of the tricked-out sports coupes are equipped with aftermarket superchargers; plus, with “just” 200 hp, the FR-S is ripe for a power boost. Apparently, TRD agrees, and is looking to do something about it.

TRD has a long history of offering supercharging options for many of Toyota’s corporate engines, so it’s a natural avenue for the brand to explore for its latest and sportiest offering. In addition, Scion knows its customers will be looking to bump the FR-S’s output, so it’s looking to enter the fray with a factory-warranted option. Already, TRD offers several upgrade parts for the FR-S that mirror those offered for the Toyota GT 86 (as the FR-S is known in other markets), including an exhaust, lowering springs, an intake, and a big-brake kit. So far no specifics are known about the possible supercharger kit, including how much power it would add; TRD also hasn’t confirmed whether its home-brew blower has been given the green light. If it is given the go-ahead, the supercharger add-on would make for the only factory-backed avenue for a forced-induction Scion FR-S, given how a production turbo model is off the table, at least for the U.S.

That said, we’re told that if it does happen, the supercharger likely will be unique to TRD and the FR-S, meaning it won’t be shared with Subaru. That said, the underhood similarities between the FR-S and the BRZ are undeniable, so it’s possible Subie owners could fit their cars with any supercharger designed to fit the Scion. Or not. We’ll have to wait and see what Scion and TRD come up with.

One way they can try to enforce it to be unique to the FR-S is to only sell the kit according to VIN.

would love to see this thing get some factory boost, especially since it'll be covered under warranty. all TRD parts are covered under warranty, right?

edit: i think i'd prefer to see a supercharger because of linear power. but that's just me

sorry, i'm on meds because of sickness, and mind is a little slower than usual right now.

Probably has to do with CARB certification (expensive) and warranty. Aftermarket kits don't need to be concerned with those issues.

Actually it has already been made...I just came back from SEMA (was part of the Scion To SEMA group) and this car was revealed there and was announced it had the first actual production version of the TRD supercharger in it. No performance numbers were given nor the hood was never opened...

So this would be like the TRD door stabilizers and intake sound changers that I already have for my BRZ?
Good luck to TRD if they manage to keep a blower to themselves that can actually make more powa and have factory fit/finish.

I would assume that as soon as it goes live, if it does, there's gonna be a hailstorm of orders for the part from all BRZ, FR-S and 86 owners interested.

Meh. Another rumor to add to the multitude of "source" rumors.

I 100% agree a great example is the big brake kit..hmm $10k or $2-3K for other brands. I feel like people who are buying the TRD items are just buying the name brand and maybe the factory warranty in some cases. There are turbo kits out already for roughly $4-5K. So if I were to guess I bet that the TRD kit will be around $10-15K
