That'll depend on the ECU they use. It took Cobb 5 years to break the encryption on the MS80 in the N54.

If it's the same ECU as the B58, it'll just need a big turbo and secondary fueling. The motors have been shown to hold 1000hp since the N54

Out of all the Tada-san Goodwood interviews, I thought his most poignant quote was:

"I think the new Supra will be the last present from Toyota to those who enjoy hearing the pleasing sound of a pure petrol engine at high revs.

I hope that people will be able to enjoy the new Supra for a long time to come. Perhaps in another 30 years we will be able to meet again and talk about how good it was."

If the FR-S/86 adds anything at all to the conversation it's that Toyota's typical resale value will not apply to the BMW-rebadge.

This would be the four cylinder variant with no options. I can see that being a possibility. They have mentioned targeting the Nissan Nismo as a direct competitor, and that starts at $45k, so it is possible the 6 cylinder will be $45k and the 4 cylinder will be at $35k. At $35k, the 4 cylinder would be sold well against the Mustang, Camaro and 370z.

Another thing to consider is the last gen Z4 had a 4-turbo, a six-turbo and a more powerful six-turbo—335hp vs 300hp, so I can see the Supra following suit with a 4-turbo, 6-turbo and a faster/special edition with the special edition approaching $65k. The Z4 can have more amenities, comfort features consistent with their brand, and a high price respectively.

The car will likely have similar pricing to the last gen Z4.

My bet, price is right rules:

$46,495 for the 4banger
$56,495 for the I6
$63,495 for the TRD

Option packages will be BMW style so adding 6-8k to the above numbers will be trivial.

I think the Toyota will be cheaper. The interiors will be different with the BMW feeling more luxurious. Convertibles are typically more expensive, so again that means the BMW will be more. Options are typically larger and more expensive on luxury brands, so the “price as tested” is likely to exceed that of the Supra’s. Then there is the branding. The Supra has a name for itself, but given a similar enough setup, most will buy the BMW for the branding if they are priced identical, so I’m sure the Toyota will be prices less. My guess is at least $5k cheaper.

I agree mostly with your statement. I actually think the interior will be much more similar to the Z4 than people are expecting, but I have no proof, only a hunch. Think Fiat 124 interior.

That said I expect the Z4 to be more expensive. 5k is a reasonable number. The last year current Z4 started at $49,700 which is 3200 more than my low end estimate of the Supra, so 51K is not a big reach for a new model Z4.

I haven’t pulled up the interior shots side by side, but I could imagine the bones being the same with completely different materials and features. A regular cup holder could be in the Toyota, but a fancy one that pops out could be in the BMW. The materials could be as different as a VW Jetta’s are to an Audi A3/4’s. Or like the 86 vs the BRZ, there could be more steering wheel controls or buttons for things like seat warms/coolers, dual climate control, automatic cruise control, driver warning systems, mood lighting, infotainment, etc.

I'd still get the auto. Faster shifts than the standard manual.
