Did you get at it from the top? I was looking at attacking it from underneath...

So I replaced the coil; here's a quick writeup for anyone with P0352:

Code: P0352 (Cylinder #2 - Driver's side rear coil, closest to firewall)

Part #: 22433AA652
Source: Ciocca Subaru online parts site
http://parts.cioccasubaru.com/p/Suba...2433AA652.html

Tools Needed:
12mm socket w/ extension
10mm shallow socket

Step 1: Remove the strut tower brace (12mm socket) - 3 nuts and 1 bolt.

Step 2: Remove the fuel line bracket that is against the shock tower. There is one bolt holding it onto the shock tower, and you can un-clip the fuel lines from the plastic retainers. This needs to be done to make room for the HPFP heat shield / cover.

Step 3: Remove the HPFP heat shield which is held on by 2 bolts (12mm), one on either side, and alignment tabs that hook into the intake manifold runners.

Now you have access to the driver's side rear cylinder! (albeit it's a tight space, but I have big hands and had PLENTY of space)

Step 4: Unplug the connector to the coil pack; press down on the small tab at the end of the connector and pull gently away from the coil pack - the connector should come unplugged.

Step 5: Using a short 10mm socket and a thin ratchet, remove the single 10mm bolt to the left of the coil pack.

Step 6: Gently use two fingers, one on each side of the coil pack, to pull it out of the cylinder, then guide the coil pack out towards the left due to the tight clearance to the frame rail, as the boot end is plenty flexible, and voila, it's out!

Repeat the steps backwards to reinstall. Make sure the coil pack is secure against the spark plug, and you can check the alignment using the cylinder next to it as a reference.

Start up the car and make sure there is no misfire or any indication the coil pack is not secure BEFORE you reinstall the strut tower brace, heat shield and fuel line clips.

Some reference photos:

This is my second coil to fail already. Just got P0352 yesterday. Just ordered the part from local Subaru dealership will replace it once they have the part in. I appreciate the guide you posted above. I'm sure it will save me a lot of time. Thank you.

Also got P0352 last track outing, will be replacing this weekend if the coil arrives in time.

Thanks for the guide @smbstyle

No symptoms but it popped twice on track, first one 10 minutes in, second 15 minutes in and only one code stored on the ECU, not two, as soon as I noticed I backed off, hopefully I don't have another one for my next outing, I will likely drive through the next check engine light unless I feel symptoms of something not right, seems like there's quite a bit of deterioration before ultimate failure.

Seems like the el cheapo solution is to rotate coils until all four have been known failures but I'll cross that road when I come to it. Also seems to be good feedback on ceramic coated headers...

This issue happens to me on a totally stock car. About a year ago the dealer swapped the coils on the driver side of the motor, and recently the issue started coming back with the coil "B" code. I'm going to take the car in and ask them to replace my ignition coils under warranty.

Okay. What the heck is going on? After getting p0352 I replaced the coil the Monday before Christmas following @smbstyle guide. I just got the same code recently the same way. 3rd gear WOT at redline. Its only been 2 months. I'm thinking maybe I installed it wrong but I would assume it would be throwing the code all the time if I had. Anyone have a coil go out so soon after replacing it? I have not tracked the car. Just some 3rd gear WOT pulls to collect some ecutek logs and spirited driving. If it makes a difference I got both p0352 codes after installing stage 1 sprintex kit.

possibly swap Coil 1 & 2 see if fault follows coil, if it does points to coil again, if not then fault likely in wiring/connector or control module.

Add me to the list of those who received p0351 --- Showed up today around 5500rpm while WOT

Cleared code and awaiting to see if/when it returns.

FWIW - Running a JRSC setup. Was not at the track.
