Reliability is a must. I don't want to keep driving my 86 to work. I'm putting upwards of 300 miles every 2.5 days on it. The miles are racking up. And because I intend to keep my 86 for life, I'd rather it not end up with 20k+ miles in under a year, which is exactly what will happen if I don't buy a beater soon.

The Cobalt SS I've been eyeing is going for under $7k with under 80k miles on it. I am sure it wouldn't be as reliable as going for a Civic or Corolla, but it'll definitely be more fun while still having decent reliability. It's also a relatively fuel-efficient car. I recall averaging upwards of 27 mpg with my old '09 Cobalt SS turbo on my commute.

Get the cobalt. Unfortunately you'll find yourself modding the beater pretty quickly since it has such an accessible amount of power. You can make 300 whp+ on a turbo cobalt without too much hassle, whereas with a twin it requires a decent investment.

I think they're cool. I tried a Saab 9-5 version of the same thing though didn't come away impressed, the body and interior were awesome but the engine and transmission were shot - poor shifts and took forever to come on boost but when it did it definitely felt like it was hauling ass.
Those were the days. Less people think the twins are Ferrari beaters nowadays so I've mellowed out I guess.

@radroach That’s the goal if the SS doesn’t pan out. I’ve been eyeing a Matrix XRS with 120k miles on it.
@Summerwolf I owned a Cobalt SS turbo from Dec 2010 - Sept 2015. It was a great car, although I never modded it beyond a short ram intake. You’re probably right about that, though. One regret I had was never tuning the SS. Back then, GM offered a tune package that would push the whp around 300 iirc for under $600. Like I said, though, reliability’s a must. Idk if I will be willing to mess with the motor characteristics too much at the detriment of daily driver usage, y’know? 300 whp sounds amazing, but I feel it’ll come at the cost of reliability.
