Thumbs up Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S Convertible Roadster confirmed (with photos from Long Beach)

According to German publication Autobild, lead 86 developer Tetsuya Tada has confirmed plans to bring a convertible 86/GT86 roadster to the market.

In an interview, Tada confirms that the convertible is coming and adds that the GT 86 was designed from the outset to be a convertible as well. The timing of market release has not yet been decided, however.

Details:

Designed and built by Cartel Customs, lead by Jeremy Lookofsky, the Cartel Speedster takes the top clean off the FR-S, leaving in its place a low windshield, sloped side windows, and a double-bubble deck lid in classic speedster style.

The custom FR-S is also outfitted with a wide range of other mods, including: an upgraded clutch, exhaust, and suspension; Wilwood brakes; larger 18x8-inch front and 18x9.5-inch rear wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888 tires; custom fenders and hood; a 61-inch carbon fiber wing; custom paint; and a fully custom interior.

The Cartel Speedster FR-S will debut at the 2012 Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix.

Thanks Hachi!

I think this model is what will skew the demographic over to the female side...

I thought they weren't going to make a convertible for this car to maintain the structural rigidity of the car?

I think it is a good thing. Scion and Toyota proper needs a roadster. I hope it will be a two seater.

In the future there's going to be a lot of these moments, just like how they said there would never be a forced induction version... Seems they might have a case of foot in mouth here. I'm hoping there will be both a drop top and a FI version (either SC or Turbo is ok by me)

Excited, I hope this is true. The highest trim with all the luxuries and amenities available for a convertible and lowest spec coupe for the track. Combo breaaaaaaker

Convertible GT86 = The new S2000, IMO.

this story is jumping to conclusions. we've known for quite sometime that the chassis was designed so that it can be made into a convertible. that in no way means they are in the process of making one. thinking about it? planning? sure. did tada say outright they are making a convertible? nope. also there has to be a financial case to move forward , and imo there simply isnt. convertibles dont really sell well. 2 seat cars dont sell well.

if anything, the chassis may spawn a 2 seat HYBRID. we have seen the GRMN hybrids

but they were using a MR platform based off the MR2. MR would be hella cool, but why go there when you have a perfectly developed RWD chassis already? HSD on a FR platform? done! GS450h, LS600h, etc. to me it makes perfect sense. make a CRZ type car, except its unique in that its a convertible. it can compete with both the CRZ and next gen miata which is supposedly going back to being super small and super light, which means super weak engine as well. so a real sporty hybrid? it just may happen....

I don't understand why anybody would want more weight on this car. I can understand a 370Z roadster but not with this. If they can make a roadster at the same weight or less then it makes sense to me.
