I'm not. I've had friends that picked the 86 over the Cayman. Cayman is faster and does everything technically exceptionally well, but it can be perceived as quite boring and uninvolving for daily use.

Many have picked the Supra over the M2/4 simply cuz those are less refined for daily driving and feel less balanced, etc. And the Alpine isn't even available here, but if it were I'd take one plus a Supra over the price of one 911 anyday.

Also, when was any generation of Supra the 'Halo' car for Toyota/Lexus? Maybe for kids who watch bad movies. The 2JZ has been in everything from a Cressida to an IS300. In what world does Chris Harris think a $50k sports coupe from Toyota is meant to displace the LFA, LS, or LC as Toyota's flagship products? Dollar for dollar after inflation, the new Supra is even cheaper than the A80 was when it was released originally.

I think there's quite a bit of reality distortion field around the Supra name.

IDK about distorted reality, here in AU the top Jap cars from the 80's and 90's were/are still the Supra and the Skyline.

These were the cars I watched race in the 80's and 90's.

These are the cars that for the last 30 years have been getting modified and raced on the track and street in every state of Australia.

Maybe it's different in other countries, but here, the Supra was the pinical for a Toyota performance car, albeit did lack any real support from Toyota in our racing series, that didn't stop people putting big singles on and winding up the boost, nothing local, read: V8, had a hope in hell of keeping up with them.

As for the LFA, LOL, 1st released in 2010, the last Toyota Supra was released in 2002 I believe, 8 years later, and as there was no Supra, yes, the LFA was the "new" pinical car.

As for F&F, the movie was released in 2001, at the end of the Supras life.

Maybe it's because some countries have only been able to import them over the last 10-15 years, and only relate them with the movie.

As for the BMW Supra, it ain't no Toyota Supra, I doubt that people will be talking about the Mk5 in 18 years.

Opinions may vary

I think that's the important part.

Just blame it on unintended reverse acceleration.

Ah, here we go again. The best driver's car for under $100k (USD) can be perceived as boring....

The Supra would never be the Halo car for a Lexus. No Toyota model would be. That's why they have separate brands with separate dealers.
It doesn't matter if it was not considered the "halo" car or "flagship" car before. It is now with the MKV.

In the US, yes the 2JZ was also on the IS300. But in GE form. The mk4 Supra came with the GTE & the V160 - much better.

The F&F movies hyped it up for a lot of people. But they also had Eclipses and Evos in those first 2 movies, also the R34.
The 2JZ is even more popular today not because of the movie, but because it's a proven engine, has almost unlimited capability, and tons of support. You don't see people meme-ing "put a 4G63 in it" the way they say "put a 2JZ in it".

If automotive enthusiasts are still a thing, the MKV will still be a thing.

As much support that is coming out for this vehicle, and hype, it's unprecedented. There would have to be major cultural shift in the automotive scene as a whole for the MKV to not be talked about in 20 years. Especially if they put in a 6MT.

BTW, none of all this means I am a "fanboy", I'd love for it to be a Toyota powered engine just like anyone else.

The LS has variants that have been in everything from cars to trucks. Does that mean the Corvette is not Chevy’s halo car?

Also, what it is and what it could or should have been are two different things. I think you are confusing the two.

BTW, what does everyone think of the Blue color ? White, Black, and Red are too "supra" to me, like too common I guess. I don't see too many blue mk4s... But I do like White or Black on the mk5..

I don't think a Supra is a halo car or a halo product.
Its a flagship sports car in Toyota's lineup of 2 sports cars.....

The Nissan GTR is probably Nissan's halo car.
The Acura NSX is probably Acura's halo car.
The Lexus LFA was Lexus' halo car...but I think its the LC now.
I wouldn't put the Supra in the same class as those. GTR comes close because it used to be compete with the Supra but its a tier higher now.

Toyota's? I think it used to be the 2000GT...but nothing succeeded it.
Maybe its the Toyota Century...…..or Crown...but those are Japan only and fairly obscure outside of Japan.
I don't really know what Toyota's Halo car is.....

I really like the blue. I’ve always bought black or white, but I’ve always been a fan of midnight blue Porsches, and I enjoyed MKIVs that had the royal sapphire pearl or the baltic blue, so I would definitely consider the Supra blue. In fact, RSP MKIVs were one of the most coveted Supras. It looks really good in the light.

Neither does Toyota. The LFA was a leap forward, which didn’t have enough DNA in common with the Supra to get the name. A halo Supra would have been a step back from the LFA. The LC500 is just an F engine in a luxury grand touring sedan. It is more of an exercise in form, class, luxury, etc than an enthusiast sports car or a performance car. The ISF might be faster (?).

The current Supra isn’t a halo car. The Supra name has a pedigree that suggested the next rendition could have been a halo car.

I guess, what is the difference in halo vs flagship?

The land cruiser is the most expensive.
The Supra today would be the best performance currently, even though what's underneath.
