tawheed: there should be no illeffects for this mod that i know off, and most that did liked change in clutch pedal feel.
However if you are also doing clutch pedal dead travel adjustment, be more careful with that, leaving some free travel, not taking it all out with adjusting engagement point right after from fully pressed. Very slight clutch drag sometimes hard to notice, and for sure disengage you'll press more, so it will chew quickly through flimsy stock rubber clutch pedal bumpstop.

Can someone repost the tutorial with pictures? also, as far as pedal height.....what are people looking for. I've owned 2 manuals in my life and never adjusted the height, so what would I be looking for in that realm. I'm 5'7 if that matters.

IIRC in pedal travel adjustment mod it was mentioned "slightly lower then brake pedal", but on mine it resulted in slight clutch drag. Car didn't move in gear with clutch pressed, when giving some gas, but engaging reverse was noticeably harder, so i dialed back some dead travel, some 0.5"/1cm of pedal travel from felt bite point. Lesser then stock dead travel, but not with felt clutch bite right away from full press.

Well google is your frienemy. I found a Youtube video showing how to remove it. Simple. I did lose the E-clip though, it went flying, somwhere. It came off with very little force in about 10-15mins of work.


Everything else is oiled and in a Ziploc for storage. I had very little slop in the first few mm's of depression of the pedal. I like the harder feel of the clutch and I must say the engagement points are easier to feel. This mod will stay on my car.

Worth every theoretical penny. Just did it before my 45 minute drive to work and it made the feel of the pedal infinitely better.

Bunch of zip ties probably. You can use the MTEC clutch spring install instructions.

Hey guys so I just took the spring out and I have a question for people who also has a tune with an OFT. After I took the spring out I tried to recline it but it stops to where the launch control is set. Is this normal?

Pulled the spring this morning. It now feels more like what I'm used in my All Trac/GT4 Celica. Definitely worth doing in my opinion.

Apologies for the bump, but I have never seen so many likeminded people on one thread! Just done this 4 years after buying my first brz, and so wish I had done it straightaway - this car has always made me feel like an amateur when changing gear (20+ years of driving exclusively stick) with it's vague clutch. First drive after removing spring and I feel like i can drive properly again.
Can honestly say if I was only allowed one mod on this car, this would be it. Just done it on my impreza too with exactly the same huge improvement. Feel like i've wasted years of satisfied driving time waiting until now.

And would echo tips above about making sure pedal is fully depressed when doing the mod to reduce knuckle skin loss...

So would you say I should do this the day I pick up my 86? Or 6 months in so I can appreciate the difference (assuming it hasn't been done already by the current owner).

No, I'd definitely give it a while with the spring in place - some (maybe most?) seem to be quite happy with the clutch, in which case there's no need to have a heavier clutch for no reason. I started driving in the early 90s so may just be I got used to those less modern clutches and can't adapt. For me though, this mod is night and day.

I did this mod less than a week into owning the car. Totally worth it. Weight of the pedal doesn't really seem that much different, but linearity and feel are greatly improved. Does this clutch really seem that heavy without the spring to people? I feel like if you can hold the break down you should have no issue with the clutch as the break pedal is heavier feeling imo.

I also did this recently as really the first mod (other than small bulb changes) that I did to my car; mind you, I'm a complete newb at modifying anything on cars.

This DIY was fairly straightforward and definitely worth doing. Really the hardest part for me was getting the pin out and then putting it back together sans spring. Had to use a hammer and really use just brute force to get it back together.

The difference is night and day, even my friend who I let test drive it (spring in, then spring out) felt it was way better. This is my first manual car so I had thought that maybe me jerking into gears at times was because I sucked at manual but having the spring out has been smoothing the ride out for me, so maybe I don't suck as much as I initially thought.

Do it, definitely recommend!
