Risks in motorsports cannot be eliminated, reduced sure, but not eliminated. How far the sport has come to reduce those risks, IMHO, is extraordinary. Kubica, in an earlier era would be dead, so would Massa and Mark Webber while we're at it.

When something happens where someone gets hurt, there's always outcry as if people have been lulled into some state of delusion in which driving at triple digit speeds in a ground rocket full of combustible fluid at the ragged edge of adhesion is somehow now or will ever be safe. Risks occur but to eliminate risk would be to eliminate the sport entirely. Risk is life, the reduction of unnecessary risk is paramount but in that, what is inherent, will always be inherent.

At least Bianchi will be on par with the brain damage endured by countless former NFL players. I don't see a thread on here about how Brett Favre can't remember half the things he does anymore. Frankly, F1 has done more for safety than any other dangerous sport I can think of.

Michael Schumacher

From Sports Illustrated:

A French doctor who treated seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher says he is no longer in a medically-induced coma and predicted a recovery from his skiing accident within three years.

Jean-Francois Payen, the chief of the anesthesiology department at Grenoble University hospital that treated Schumacher for six months in Switzerland after his injury in December 2013, said that Schumacher is making some progress from his injuries, but it will take time for him to heal.
Schumacher, 45, was skiing with his teenage son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting his head on a rock. He is now recovering at his home with his wife and children.

“Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages,” Payen told RTL radio in France. “He predicted a convalescence of one to three years. We hope, but we have to give him time.”

Payen said that Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, played an important role in his recovery.

"His wife is surrounded by excellent advice and has put in place everything to help him get better,” Payen said. “Corinna's someone who is very bound to Michael of course but who has a clear-headedness and a will to help him get better and who is just extraordinary."

Schumacher retired from racing in 2012, but not before setting Formula

One records of championships, wins in a career and wins in a season.

Very well put!
I have dealt with reducing risk (EH&S) for over 25 years and know better than many that it is impossible to eliminate them all.
Hell, you are at risk sleeping snug in your bed much less driving F1.
Auto racing in general has come so far in the last 30 years that it is almost unbelievable.

Rice I am going to steal your highlighted quote for my Orientation and Risk Assessment training but will be sure you get a cut if I every make any money off it!

Caterham will probably be gone at the end of the season, Marussia might follow suit soon too. If that happens, 3 car teams next year.

WEC is missing the boat on this one.. they should totally be trying to capitalize on the fall (or follies) of F1.

WEC would be smart to run both an Enduro series and a championship sprint race series with just LMP cars in the 90 minute format or format very similar to F1. If they did that, there would be very little need for me to ever watch F1 again and I think this would generate a larger fan base for their Enduro races outside of the 24 in France.

I really wish Formula One would go back to where they were a few years back. High revving NA motors. Eliminate all the electronics, maybe they could reduce car and team costs as to attract new teams. And I myself loved the old cars better.
