New 2017 auto 86... Prepping for high mileage
Hey all,
I am happy to be behind the wheel of a new 2017 86 with an automatic transmission. However I am a little concerned about the mileage I will be putting on the engine. I drive about 40,000 miles per year. Yes that is correct... Per year. I wanted to create a maintenance schedule for myself. I was hoping some of you can chime in an fill in some of these blank spots, or add new items altogether. I drive in a somewhat sandy/dusty area so that may help guide certain things like air filters. Engine oil every 4,000 miles Engine oil filter every 4,000 miles Rear differential oil every ______ miles Auto transmission oil every 30,000 miles Engine air filter every ______ miles Cabin air filter every ______ miles Tires (sticking to stock wheels) every ______ miles Brake pads every ______ miles Sparkplugs every ______ miles Anything else you guys can think of? I know a lot of things are variable. Such as brake pads and tires. Just wondering what the general ballpark figures should be. I'll find tune things as I go and replace what's needed based on visible and physical wear. Just want to give myself some reference points. I'm doing a full engine oil and rear diff oil change at 1000 miles after breaking in the car. Thanks guys! |

The answers you are looking for is in your owners manual.
Air/cabin filter, just look at them every month.

Well, what @Mr.ac says may sound boring, but he's right. In dusty conditions, I'd suggest you clean/change the engine air filter quite frequently. Since you drive about 40,000 miles a year, you must drive a lot of freeway miles, which is easier on the car than in-town miles. I'd suggest you keep a close eye on the tire pressure and have the alignment checked, so as you don't eat up the tires prematurely. With driving that many miles a year, I reckon your butt will wear out before your car ..... humfrz |

Rear diff I would change when you do tranny fluid. If you aren't driving it hard, but rather long distance you could easily stretch it to 50k for each.
Spark plugs recommended every 60k. Brake pads seem to last forever on these cars... just whenever you hear a squeal should be time to change them. Tires the same brakes... just whenever you feel like they're getting bald.

There is no reason to change the oil at 4000 miles unless you're tracking the car.
6000 miles with good synthetic oil is already more than careful enough. Except maybe the first oil change that you can do before. Like it already been said keep an eye on the airfilter, but you can clean it a couple time before changing it. Just be careful not to blow air on the wrong side (you want to push sand out). Alignement from factory was not that good on my car, could be useful to save tire. Wasn't mention I think, but you may want to protect the interior regularly, especially the steering and seat, since with that many miles, they will be seeing your hands and butt a lot! |

40000 ÷ 365 = 110 miles per day every day
40000 ÷ 260 = 159 miles per day, 5 times a week. No problems! Check the fluids regularly and follow the maintenance schedule. You will be fine. Have fun! Wish I got to drive my car that much!!!!

DD with some chuckwalla track days. Maybe 5-6 times per year. I don't have a lot of track experience but this is a DD. In a couple years it will transition to full time track car.
Edit: the daily drive is a spirited backroad. It's an empty highway that's got a number of great curves. I don't know if that makes a difference. I will be redlining it a couple times a day on the 180 mile commute. |

This is correct. 180 miles round trip 4-5 times per week. I think 35,000 miles is the bottom limit, but it can be much higher.

Ehh, no big deal. My car does ~30k and I do at least 10k in my Durango running around town and road trips with the family.

I think you're the prime candidate for sticking to the owner's manual but, if you're really curious, you can always have your used oil analyzed.
