Tire question for drifting - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

What tires are you guys using for drifting? Thinking about running hankook ventus v12 or dunlop direzza DZ101. Even thought about running Sumitomo HTR Z II cause they're a little cheaper. Just wanna know what you guys have used and what you thought of em.

lol i'm sure ill burn em up, but im gonna be 350 hp by spring. Gonna need new tires by summer i'm thinking

Until you get really good/serious, I would go for the cheapest tires possibly (I usually a falken lower end because I get them at cost through my tire distributor)... I usually go through 1-2 new pairs in 1 event with my old drift car... so cheaper the better imo, and make good friends with a tire shop if you don't have a tire machine readily available :-D

Use the cheapest tire you can find unless you're getting serious.

I hate to say it, but you're not gonna be holding much speed/angle with 350hp...

Haven't ran hankooks yet. Dunlops are pretty good. But I think they might be a little to grippy for stock frs/brz. The sumitumo are pretty crappy IMHO .. They tend to chunk pretty badly and don't last long at all. Had a pair in the rear of my s13 (sr20 with bolt ons) and I only got about 3 runs and those tires were toast lol ..I'd go with falkens or federals

That was kind of my thought, but i figured that it was a good place to start with this platform

Achilles makes some good tires for around 70-80 each. Flip the fronts to compensate for (lack of) camber wear.

Stick to the less sticky stuff until you got the power to break traction on both rears easily.

Look into getting a clutch type LSD.

Im a big fan of the DZ101, consistent feel from brand new to practically dead, good wear, no chunking issues

As Philstar mentioned...

DZ101's are consistent. We have used them on a wide variety of setups.
Smokes well too.

V12's have worked well for us too. in 17's these are pretty cheap, and should be able to provide plenty of runs on the FR-S.
We have used S.Drives in the past, the tires run slightly wider then the above mentioned. We always got few more runs out of these then the other two.

I am curious to try out Achillles tires... cheap, but I hear they perform well.

DZ101's are still my favorite tire for drifting. They are consistance from start to finish and never delaminated or chunked. TONS of smoke too. But they didn't last very long and were a lot of money.

I have been using Kenda's for the last 2 years and they are great. Not the stickiest but they last forever!!!!! They are super affordable.
