That fiberglass tray plays a role in holding up the long plastic piece that runs down the driver's side of the car, so you could lose that too without it. As for aero, because those trays are interlocking, it's all or nothing, and all is definitely better.

Thanks for the advice Brent I'll definitely check out the rest of the underside. I'll call my dealership and see if I can get the tray replaced under warranty.

What do I need besides the oil filter and the oil itself? I saw some mention of a valve/drain plug? Gasket, o-ring?

You will want to replace the drain plug gasket too or it will seep. Sometimes you can get 2 uses out of one by flipping it over. Some of the filters come with a new one but you can buy them individually from toyota or subaru.
