My local US Toyota dealership now taking deposits!

Hey all,

Just got an email from one of the salesmen that I spoke to at Longo Toyota (El Monte, CA). In his email he says :

Hi xxxxxx,

This is Ryan from Longo Scion. I want to let you know that we are open to take deposits on the upcoming FR-S for next summer. If you are interest, please feel free to let me know, Thanks.

This is great news y'all!! Too bad I'm a broke college student atm, lolz. But I'm gonna check what's the minimum required deposit, and will keep ya posted. Have a great weekend!

This is a great dealership?! They're providing the service of 'holding' your money in their bank for a year? Gee what nice guys. Good thing you are a broke student, save your money in a real bank (not that that will help much). It's not like they'll be rationing them or something once they arrive, I mean... Toyota's got a big, long, production line just waiting to spit these liitle suckers out in no time flat

What kind of agreement would they require you to sign with that deposit?

I don't know why anyone would put a deposit on a normal everyday car that isn't finalized. It's not like it'll be a super unique hyper exotic, of which there will only be 10 made ever, and if you don't slap down that cash you won't ever be able to pick one up. Hell, I remember when I was shopping for cars a while back, I asked about putting a deposit a Fit because they were supposed to start trickling into dealerships within the month, and was told that I could put down a non-refundable 500 dollar deposit and they'd be sure to get me one! Yeah, I left.

Well if you really want to be the very first kid on the block to own one a deposit might actually make sense; otherwise keep your money in the bank.

I say we flood his email Inbox in 3...2...1...

I've been to Longo. It's like the shopping mall of Toyotas yet they didn't have the specific Tacoma that I was looking for out of their large inventory of trucks.

He's just blowing hot smoke. What salesman wouldn't be glad to take your money!!!

Crock of shit if you ask me!

This. The first play in their playbook is to say "if you could write me that check today, my manager will make you a great deal!" Now you pretty much have to take whatever deal they offer because you aren't getting that check back without a fight. Dealers are scum.

That's usually the case, but the good thing (or bad, depending on demand) about Scion-branded cars is that dealers are required to sell at MSRP, no more no less.

That's true, but purchase price is only one part of the equation. They can manipulate your trade in value, how much they want for a down payment, and what rate they want to give you, to turn more of a profit on the car. Not to mention ripping you off with accessories, fees, etc. I think it's better to go to a few different dealers and play them against each rather than going all in with one dealer right off the bat. The Subaru may even go for below retail, or below invoice, so it could end up being a better deal.

You haven't heard? This is the new tofu delivery car that will defeat the all mighty GTR and the 458! Buying it automatically means you can drift and turn you headlights off to win the race! oh and it comes quake proof!

That's excellent news for those who live on the east coast!

That's about the funniest thing I've seen all week. Epic.

On topic, I had a quick question on the Scion pricing rules. From what I've read from here, they are required to sell the price as it is advertised, which can differ from place to place. Ie. If one place advertises at $20,000, they have to sell at 20k but if another place advertises at 19.5k, they have to sell at 19.5k. So with that said, does scion ever offer any deals? By deals I mean like 1k off MSRP or cheaper interest rate, more for your trade in, etc. like other dealerships do?

Scion has rebates for military and college graduates. There might be other deals too.

Thanks guys. This was definitely education to read all your posts, and most of all funny with the earthquake picture. I will definitely hold on to my money

Question though: When they sell Scion at the "no haggle" price, does that mean that they're absolutely NOT able to lower the price for ya?
