How much for a rear quarter respray?

Hi all,

You may remember me from the BRZ sub where I mentioned how I compounded the clearcoat of my new WRB BRZ by hand...

My understanding is that the only way to fix it is to repaint the entire panel. I also painfully came to the conclusion that the rear quarter panel is the largest panel to repaint. What things should the shop be removing to ensure that I don't have flaking clear coat in a few years? How much is reasonable for a very good paint job?

Thanks!

Lol sorry. It's just comical about your situation.

I can't really say how much, cause I don't know how bad it is. But most body shops will try and sell you on painting the whole side so they can paint match it as best they can.

Typically I seen it go for anywhere from $500-$1000.
If it was me I'll shop around and just drop names and prices just so they can compete. They may not go much lower but a dollar is a dollar.

As far as removing stuff I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean the paint/clear coat or the body trims? Either way, that is point it's up to the body shop.

They can probably just touch up the clear coat.

I'd write it up for around $550ish here. blend out color, clear quarter/sail panel/rocker. Replace small clear film on lower quarter near door edge.

Thanks guys. I got a quote for refinishing the quarter panel with blending into the trunk, rocker panels for $880, this is with rear glass removal.

Does anyone know where a body shop would end the clear coat if they blend into the rocker panel? He told me that it would go into the door jamb, which made sense to me, but where would that end? Underneath the beginning of the carpetting? I am basically hoping for a job that is as good (well, hopefully better) than factory and won't flake off of the edges eventually.

Also a follow-up:

I am moving from Missouri to Washington state in a few months, I think I may wait to have this job done there so I can have the warranty. Does anyone know if rates in Seattle are particularly bad or good?

I've lived in both Saint Louis and the Seattle area.

I think you will find the cost of body work about the same - if you get it done a few miles outside of Seattle.

Thanks, Humfrz. Do you have a body shop to recommend in the Seattle region?

No I don't. I'm fortunate that I have lived in the area for 25 years and never had to have any auto body work done.

I'd suggest you contact some of the auto clubs around here for a reference.

So, are you going to take the Oregon Trail out? -

Humfrz, sorry for the late reply. I got distracted in my sadness about wanting the eye sore fixed haha.

Unfortunately, I will be driving to Seattle in December, so even with winter tires (I got an insane deal on brand new Enkeis+Sottozero IIIs for about 650 dollars total), I think I am going to drive to SoCal (basically be driving right now to Route 66) and then go up the West Coast (so I will hit PCH, yay!). My family and I are making a road trip out of my move.

Oh, that will be a nice road trip!

Have fun and be safe.

For anyone who cares:

Just got the car back from the shop:https://imgur.com/gallery/TjXc4kY

Happy with the match and the fact they didn't have to get into the trunk.

All windows and trims were properly removed, so the only visible line is where the clearcoat ends in the door jamb. It's not great, but not terrible. Inclined to leave it since I am the only who will know that it's there (well, also a slimy used car salesman who knows where to look but I am not gonna sell my BRZ any time soon)

Case closed!

From personal observation I find this hard to believe. I was in the car with you for no more than 20 seconds and BAM!
