I blame BMW/Mazda/whoever else at this point. Though the screen in my dad's Mazda 3 isn't too bad once you get used to it. But I still question whoever's responsible in the first place for the screen sticking out of the dash instead of recessed into the facade of it.

Of course then you have the Model 3 with the huuuge-r screen.

Neat another car to prove that enthusiasts don't buy new cars they say they will.

Internet says:
"We want lightweight cars!"
"We want fun cars!"
"We want manual transmissions!"
"We want practical hatchbacks not lame sedans!"
"Miata is always the answer!"
"Wagons!"

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2018/03...february-2018/

2018 YTD sales:
Mustang: 10,532
Challenger: 9,498
Camaro: 6,547
MX-5: 1,090
86: 678
370Z: 536
BRZ: 505
Fiat 124: 406

There have been more 911's sold this year than 86's+BRZ's or MX-5's+124's. Ford builds more F-series trucks per year than all of Subaru's cars combined.

The average internet enthusiast is unable to afford (or unwilling to pay for) a $5k Miata, let alone a brand new car. This Corolla hatch will sell poorly and the manual transmission in the US will be dropped within three years "due to lack of demand" probably two.

But in 8 years it'll be a 'top pick' on some website and command ~$2k more on the used market than the CVT and be featured on whatever takes the place of RCR and TST 10 minute car review with someone saying "wow this isn't so bad! Shame nobody bought them."

This exists to make a dent in the Mazda 3 and VW Golf, not much more. Toyota is slowly making their cars a little more engaging, but this model is a safe bet to import from other regions and move ~20k units in the US with minimal efforts from Toyota USA, which is more than the 86 will sell btw.
Quote:
Corolla buyers overwhelmingly choose the sedan over the hatch. In 2017, iM sales in the U.S. amounted to 20,501 units. Subtracting this number from the Corolla family’s overall U.S. sales leads us to a figure of 308,695 — obviously, the sedan reigns supreme in buyers’ minds.

tl;dr I'm a cynical asshole, the US is only getting this car because it's a safe bet, this is not indicative of an overall trend of Toyota transforming into a company that builds fun cars across their lineup, it'll do well enough to justify it's import fees. If it's a letdown it's just another stake in the coffin turning cars into appliances.

The sideview is a little disorienting. Are the wheels absolutely massive, or are the brakes unbelievably tiny?

If you look at the parking lot render with the white car, brakes are more appropriately sized for the wheels. Blue is likely shown with optional +1" wheels.

I think someone at Toyota corporate was sad to see the Tc die after they killed Scion and decided to salvage the would-have-been Tc redesign. Probably not really.

I agree that it looks French. Renault or Peugeot.

It's nicely styled. Too bad small cars are fast-dying in America. Maybe the the next-gen Corolla will adopt some of these design elements - but probably the target demo of 60+ women would be confused and offended.

2 things here.

1: I believe that the sub-prime lending trend for new car financing has created the new-car market to be a bit inflated. Once the car-loan crisis hits (like the home-loan crisis of 2008), new cars may be a lot more affordable. When I see people taking out 7+ year loans on a car I'm just shaking my head knowing that's not a sustainable reality.

2: So much [good] advice floating around about how buying a new car is dumb dumb dumb. The new-car vs slightly-used car value delta needs to narrow some.

Bonus round: People are ditching compacts/sedans for trucks/suvs/crossovers and until gasoline starts to get really expensive I wouldn't expect that trend to change.

I like it. Saw the prototype at Indy Grand Prix of Long Beach but too much crowd to get decent pics. Looks good in person, but could be better with a slightly aggressive lip kit. If I had a need for a car like this it would be my first pick, but the

tl;dr - need Rocket Bunny
