You really have the best of both worlds with an AT with paddle shifters. You can drive around and switch over to some manual action whenever you want.

I love my 6MT but sometimes I wish it was AT so I can just drive around without having to shift. Maybe I'm just too lazy...

I bought 2015 in April and at the time I wanted a manual but there were few to be had at that time. My thinking was manuals are more fun to drive, right? Well, with a bit of time I have come to be glad I didn't get a stick. One reason is I have a labral tear in my right shoulder which flares up from time to time and when it does, 1st, 3rd and 5th gears would be a real problem. Another reason is the paddles are pretty fast for shifting and when I'm cruising in the mountains, I always hated the up and down on the accelerator so now I keep my foot where I want it and just work the paddles to maintain my speed. Soooo much easier. As this is my daily drive and at the present my work drive is all stop and go city traffic, automatic is easy. When I want to play with it, slap the shifter to the left and go paddles. No buyers remorse required. With the right mods you can make the car as snappy as you want it. JMHO

You don't even have to put the automatic in manual mode to use the paddle shifters. As soon as you start using them the car switches to manual automatically until coming to a stop.

I got an automatic because my last car was a manual Mustang 5.0 with the track pack. Only way to get that option was to get the time bomb of a transmission known as the MT-82. I'm done with shifting for a while after dealing with that pile of junk.

Automatic actually connects me with the car better. I find I can just relax and drive the car instead of worrying about RPM and what gear I'm in. Sometimes i like to just crank the stereo and not deal with shifting. Nice not having to worry about some moron screwing it up cause he doesn't know how to get it in reverse or even drive a manual when I have work done on it. I also like the low cruising RPM while on the highway @ 75 mph vs at least 3500 if I had the manual. Going to help with drone if i go aftermarket exhaust I would image. Or not... Plus 80% of my driving is highway during rush hour so it was an easy choice.

For those of us who cant or wont spend 50k on a better car, it is an fucking awesome car. For under 30k, we get to have a taste of supercar. I'm looking to "upgrade". Know how much it will cost to get a car that is better at the basics than what the FR-S/BRZ has given us for dirt-cheap? The 86 is an utterly improbable diamond.

If I actually do it, I shall call it "Orgasmatrom". "Driving around in some poetry". Yes.

Really the only cars that I think are on par (only counting new cars atm) with the driving feel are either...

A. Really expensive, (Cayman, Jag, something by Lotus) as Tromatic said.

B. The new Miata

And if you HAVE to have a hardtop...really the BRZ/FR-S is really just a steal of a platform.

About the Auto vs Manual thing...

I prefer the Manual, but that is just preference, not really any scientific data or anything. Both are really good.

Technically, that's not correct. If you are in Drive, and use the paddles, it will shift up or down manually with the paddles, but it also will continue to shift up or down automatically as well.

In Manual mode, the transmission never shifts up, and only shifts down at the edge of a stall.

Example AT Mode: You need to pass on the highway. You put your foot in it and at the same time downshift with the paddles twice (you are now in fourth gear). The transmission will shift into 5th as you approach redline.

Same Example Manual: You will bounce off the rev limiter until you change gears.

Tromatic, I'm probably near the point you are about the fiber and such. I love my car. Fortunately my wife loves cars and appreciates my growing obsession lol. And I know it wasn't directed at me, at least I hope not . I apologize for the GFY. I just thought posting the f-ing idiots part was inappropriate and I reacted badly myself.

My boss has an automatic FRS. People laugh at him and he's dumb because he lets it get to him, and now he doesn't enjoy the car at all. I tell him to ignore what everyone thinks and enjoy the car. I couldn't care less, is what I tell him. (My FRS is manual).

So, don't sweat it. Enjoy the car!

They are a bit different, people say it's more involving but I would not discredit the auto at all. It's equally as fun on the twisties and you forget once you're up to speed.
This. I live in Los Angeles and driving my manual FRS in traffic is a pain in the ass. In fact, I take the train to work because of how bad traffic can get and I get tired of manual in traffic.
